Bit of an odd question, hope someone can weigh in with knowledge.
Have to fly New Orleans, don’t want to check in any bags - in a hurry, all I need is carry on.
To keep it simple want to field-strip my M&P, ship the slide/barrel/mags to my address and carry on the field-stripped polymer lower w internals assembled. (Repeat - CARRY ON)
We all know that as such it is no more dangerous than a tube of toothpaste.
What woul dbe the TSA’s position on this?
Seeing that this is actually the registered part, and looks enough like a gun to raise questions, is there enough room for problems here; I can just see the “expert” TSA screener going totally retard on that one.
Should I just check a bag and deal with the wait and possible loss to avoid any issues due to ignorance.
I had a buddy how wasn’t allowed to take a DD rail, and only a rail, in carry on.
If they won’t let 1/20 scale solid plastic toy guns on a plane, I’m thinking that your chances of getting any identifiable parts of a gun in carry on are slim-to-none. You’ll be lucky not to just face administrative charges let alone criminal.
Your EDC will become your NCC, never can carry.
It is even the registered part, it IS the gun. You come thru with this and your buddy brings a barrel and a slide, which isn’t even the gun and then you meet at the gate…
I don’t see how shipping parts is going to save you time. Get a Pelican case, put it in a suitcase and check it. Done it lots. Nice and easy and pretty good way for the airline not to loose your bag, or at least find it after you have the ATF help them find it…
Regardless of whether its legal or not, you are guaranteed a hassle from TSA. I would not trust this question to any internet forum and I would be contacting TSA directly. I’ve never had an issue with pistol cases in my checked bag in dozens of flights. However, all of those flights have been direct with no stops or plane changes.
Not clear why you are considering going through all that. Why not simply check the gun in, send it on the check in bag. I sure has hell wouldn’t go that route to avoid a check in bag. Or, simply ship the gun to where you are going. That’s not uncommon.
Think I got the info I need. Wanted to see if there was a different way.
Clearly it’s a bad idea - either way. (kinda had the feeling…)
Basic Idea was I just don’t need/want to check in a bag but obviously will have to if I want to bring my edc without hassle. Stick it in my Pelican, declare, check in, deal with the wait.
Which will end this dilemma, yes.
Thanks all.
You can actually ship and insure it, to deliver to Yourself, at the adress you will be staying at. You could also, as mentioned, declare it and put it in your luggage,
its a no go item and will get you detained at the least and possibly arrested and the frame will get confiscated and you may or may not get the frame back as well as probably missing your flight.
I fly airplanes for a living and am fairly versed in TSA regs.
I believe the only thing they have relaxed the rules on recently is carrying optics in your carry on luggage. Everything else is a no go.
When I was leaving Vegas after SHOT the TSA people were loudly announcing “no gun parts in your bags”.
Yup. I said that above also. Either route has worked well for me, no problems. I wouldn’t even chance a single empty shell casing on a carry on personally. Just not worth the potential hassles regardless of the actual written rules. Neither TSA agents nor airline employees tend to be well versed in their own policies/laws. I will print out and bring with me the specific airlines rules regarding fire arms. I had one person tell me I could check in the fire arm, but no ammo. That was BS, and I pulled out the paper and showed her the airlines policy on that. Problem solved. Of course, staying calm and friendly at all times…That was not the only time various issues like that have come up. I have never had any terrible experiences (like guns lost, etc, etc) but plenty of minor stuff that added time and annoyances to the travel experience.
