Question on converting a Uzi pistol to a carbine

Ok here is the question!
I have a NoDak uzi receiver on order when I pick it up and do the 4473 if I put it as a Pistol build can later down the road can I make it into a carbine ?
what are the laws and rules on this? I know the short barrel would have to go away, so Not to have a illegal SBR .

would I have to re-register it as a carbine or can I just swap it without doing anymore paperwork?
Thanks for any help and advice

A pistol becomes a legal carbine simply by adding a barrel with a minimum length of 16" and then a stock.

It becomes a legal SBR when you have an approved Form 1 or it is transferred back to you as a registered SBR on a Form 4 (if you had a manufacturer do the registration).

By the way, if you own a short barrel, even after you have installed a carbine barrel and stock, ATF probably considers that constructive possession. Store the short barrel at a different location unless you have a registered SBR. Same goes for stocks if you have a registered pistol Uzi which can accept a stock without modification.

My recommendation is simply build a carbine and not a pistol. Add the short barrel when you decide to go the SBR route. A full size Uzi pistol is a heavy and pointless handgun.

very good point I will go with the Carbine and then SBR it down the road .after posting this I started to think about how heavy the last uzi I had was and really didnt think about it.A Uzi pistol unless a Micro would be Like holding a bowling ball:D.

I was saving to SBR my 14 inch Colt that I have a pinned FH ,But I think it will be better served with the Uzi .it don’t look right with the 16 inch barrel But it will have to do till I get all the Hoops jumped through .

Looking at Barrels it really shock me you can get a new Uzi barrels in all sizes for Under or right at 100 dollars .

I do like the German D.E.S Lower assemblies out now the last one I had was the Hebrew Marked .I saw Sarco had them for 75 bucks Just need to weld in a Block so it can’t go to the full auto position.

do you think it is worth buying the USA made semi sear or just Modifying the full auto one? with the NoDak receiver and the US weld kit they use and US barrel I am covered on 922 parts I believe

Just remember semi auto receivers require a stepped down barrel to fit in the smaller barrel rings so any SMG short barrel will need to be turned down to fit in the barrel ring.

I think it is easier to simply buy a semi sear, not sure what your gunsmithing capacity is or what tools you have. I would opt to do it just for the one more US part. They also make US handguards and grips for more compliance parts.

I’m not sure what the count requirement is, I did my Group Ind. Uzi build years ago. Since then everything has been IMI Model As that I SBRd and factory IMI SMG pre 86 dealer samples.

If he has the parts to make it into a legal firearm, ie can readily convert it back to a pistol I don’t believe he’s in danger of being in “constructive possession”

The Supreme Court ruled on this in US v. Thompson-Center Arms Co.

thanks for the Link good to know!!

the Barrels i was looking at Have the step down for the bullet ramp support ring .I think your right the More US made parts the Better I have seen the US hand guard sets they come in Black ,green and tan .

Only bad news is i just found out the Mckay complete semi Bolt and striker assemblies are now on back order till April:eek: did find One But cost about 70 bucks more and I am not sure if it US made

Your FFL should transfer it as other/receiver if they do it correctly. A receiver is not a rifle or pistol and can be built as either.

Thanks for this post guys I was going through the same thing

Thank you Todd! I wasn’t sure on how they would List it .This is one of the reasons I consider this site my home, always someone ready and willing to step up and help you .
