question for the moderators/admins re: "karma"

Is that allowed on this site? In other words- I want to give something away to a random m4c.net member… that sort of thing? I took another look at the site rules and found nothing about the subject. Please advise. Thanks.

If you are talking about the ‘karma’ (AKA reputation) function found on VBulletin, I guess the question is to how the administration would feel about enabling that function. On some message boards it can be fun and informative. On others the implementation has been a sheer disaster.

I should have been more clear.

On at least 2 of the other boards I frequent ( I’ll leave the names out, since I don’t know how the mods feel about that kinda thing) we will conduct drawings for some item or other that we don’t use or wish to pass on for other reasons. No direct cost or payment is ever involved.

example- a poster here at m4carbine.net has some old P228 grips that he has since replaced with Nills or something. That person might ask other folks to enter a drawing to “win” the grips. In my past experience, nobody ever asks for any kind of payment, even for cost of shipping. It’s just a cool way to pass on some doodad/tool/book or whatever to somebody else who might find it useful.

I did not originate the practice, but I ASSume that the term “karma” comes from the fact that no money changes hands. It’s just a way for the giver to earn some karma.

It is allowed and I’ve done it here myself.

Excellent. Thanks.

I once belonged to a private gun forum that did this sort of thing… I actually picked up a couple of really nice things on the board – nothing expensive, but valuable to me, and the stuff I put on there was mostly “rather than throw it away or have it sit in a box for 14 years” stuff… and it all went quickly.
