Question about POF rifles

I have been looking into POF rifles a lot recently and have a few questions that I can’t seem to find the answers for. Is the bolt carrier for POF piston uppers a proprietary design? In the photos I have seen, it seems almost square in the front. Or is the carrier key the only thing they have changed? Also, on their GEN 3 billet lowers with the ambidextrous bolt release, does it allow you to lock-up the bolt as well as release it? Looking at the schematic and 3D model of it, it seems like it only allows you to release it. If this is the case, would it be better to go with a different lower and just utilize a BAD lever? I have no experience with BAD levers so any of you that have used one please feel free to comment.

Buy a BCM, get a BAD or Phase 5 EBR, avoid piston ARs.

/thread.

Yes - it’s all a one-piece design.

Correct. I preferred THIS design to the BAD - it was right where your trigger finger indexes along the outside of the trigger guard anyways - made it very easy & natural to release the bolt.

I decided to streamline my AR collection recently, and my Gen.III POF became the odd rifle out, although it performed very well. FOR THE MONEY… I’d either go Noveske N4, OR, go BCM middy, and have enough left over for a quality optic and some mags!

These sorts of posts add no value.

Why get a BCM? Why not a Spike’s  or Daniel Defense? Why get a BAD lever? What muzzle device? Buffer setup?

Piston guns have their uses for certain people and/or organizations. See the reasons for the genesis of the HK416.

That said, there’s nothing wrong with a good DI AR, and one need not get wrapped around the axle where it stands on a chart. Had I shot my lowly CMMG at Mike Pannone’s February class, I have no doubt that my scores would have been the same as they were shooting a Daniel Defense.

Try using the Search feature. It may answer your questions.

I’ve got a gen3 lower, like you already figured out you can only release the bolt with the ambi design. I also like that instead of using roll pins to secure the bolt catch it uses a hex screw, easier to put in and take out. It is abit pricey and you could get a different lower a lot cheaper, but for me I’m happy with it, and wouldn’t trade it for something else.

I also would avoid the POF due to the proprietary design that in time very likely could become an orphan. This is a real problem with most piston ARs, there will be a shakeout and only a few designs will survive.

For the money you’re talking you could get an incredible DI AR instead and configure it the way you want.
