Question About NRA Range Sourcebook

I will soon own (barring some unforeseen cockup) a couple of hundred acres in the country and am eager to construct my own private pistol and rifle range.

I’ve been “googling” around and have come across some pretty decent resources (e.g. this site from the State of Minnesota: http://files.dnr.state.mn.us/destinations/shooting_ranges/outdoor_shooting_best_practices.pdf) but am always searching for more ideas.

I’ve seen the NRA Range Sourcebook (http://www.nrahq.org/shootingrange/sourcebook.asp) and was wondering if it contains practical information for a guy like me or is it primarily a resource with more administrative and safety guidelines for gun clubs, etc. By practical information, I specifically mean detailed diagrams and layouts for berms, backstops, range design, etc.

Anybody have a copy or any experience using this NRA publication who can give me a better idea of the content before I plunk down my money and order a copy?

And feel free to share any other resources specific to range design and construction.

I bought the $20 CD version. It is full of diagrams and range layouts that show all aspects including drainage and such. It covers outdoor ranges, indoor ranges, air rifle, archery, etc.

What is doesn’t do is remove the need to know local laws, codes and the need for a competent designer and builder.

It’s an idea book not an all-you-will-need book. It’s well worth $20. I would not pay the $60 for the hardbound.

I think I’ll call my local range and see if they have a copy on hand so I can give it a “once over” before ordering the CD-ROM.
