question about High Standard quality

Sooooo, ive been contimplating my first AR for some time now, and I thought I had it all figured out. then I start my new job and a couple of the guys at work are talking about High Standard and how it would be a good choice for me. Here is specifically what I was checking out a little bit today:

Upper:
http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=24480/Product/AR_15_M16_HSA_15_FLATTOP_UPPER_RECEIVER_ASSEMBLY

Lower:
http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/sid=48116/sku/HSA_15_Lower_Receiver_w_Buttstock

Plus whatever rail I decide on (not really the topic of this thread).

Anyway, what has been everyone’s opinions on this particular brand-pros and cons wanted. Listed are the upper and lower I was looking at, but dont say I can get better for that money, b/c the price I would pay for the above is significantly lower so its apples to oranges in the way of price.

Really just looking for input as to the quality of parts that go into such a setup or if i am sacrificing too much by saving a chunk of change here…

Thanks!

Your money can be spent better elsewhere.

Go for the standbys BCM, Colt, LMT, Noveske, S&W, etc.

Buy once, cry once.

For the cost of those items you can (almost) purchase a Daniel Defense XV or build a gun from Bravo Company.

Can get a DD-XV for $949, unless you really want a 1/9" twist.

i have been considering a BCM for the longest time. I guess im slow to pull the trigger on this and the longer i wait, the more options i run across.

would like to hear more opinions, would LOVE to find people who have had or used some of this equipment/parts.

i love having coffee at the water cooler

I will just echo SWATcop. for a little over a grand spent on the High Standard there are much better choices. BCM or a 6920 Colt being just a few of them.

The High Standard stuff:

Upper receiver assy: $688.99
Lower receiver assy: $324.99

Total: $1013.98 + shipping/FFL + rear sight

A similar BCM rig, midlength gas system as carbines are not in stock at Bravo:

Lower receiver assy (from G&R Tactical): $350 + free shipping + FFL
16" Midlength upper receiver assy with BCG/CH (from Bravo Company): $570
Middy handguards (from Bravo Company): $19.95
Shipping for the Bravo items: $13.95

Total: $953.90 shipped + FFL + rear sight

This is what I’d like to call a no-brainer

I recently got a BCM midlength upper and lower. I cannot say enough good about them. “Professional Grade Weaponry” is not just a marketing slogan.

I was so impressed, I got on G&Rs list for one of the BCM SBRs when they come about.

thanks for the replies.

I had some free time at work today and starting putting different ideas together. I wont get into them here as it should be in the building area, but i do have a question based on my original post.

How important is the actual lower itself? are all/most lowers built equally?? I can see the uppers being important and needing wuality parts, but what about the lower? are the better names (BCM, etc) really that much better than say the High Standard i posted???

Well considering that there is only about a $25 difference in the HS and the BCM lower that Palmguy mentioned, I would say that Bravo is definitely 25 bucks better. Its not so much the lower itself that may or may not be of better quality but the LPK alone is much better in the BCM.

That actual lower is not of great concern as long as its dimensionally accurate and most are these days(I prefer 7076 lowers vs. 6061 lowers, but thats another discussion). The parts in the lower are of greater concern than the actual lower itself.

As far as the upper, yes, unequivocally yes. The higher end manufacturers are using(over what the lower end guys are using): better steel in the barrel(4150 vs. 4140 or lower), 1/7 twist barrels, proper FSB(if you get one with a FSB), proper feed ramps, proper coatings, FA BCG(if it comes with a BCG), etc… I have told tons of people, “yea they look the same, but the devil is in the details”.

Go with a BCM, DD, Larue, Noveske, LMT, etc… upper on basically whatever lower you want(as long as the LPK is a good one).

thanks for the info guys!

I have a High Standard Upper, shot 1,000 rounds through it no problems.

I use a lot of High Standard parts for the AR from Brownells.Their parts are excellent quality some of the best quality I’ve seen.
Thier fire control parts are very good too.
In my opinion you can’t go wrong using HS parts for a build.
After all a rifle is the sum of parts.
Quality parts = quality rifle.
From what I’ve seen of the complete rifles.I would like a mil-spec stock instead of commercial. It will need a M16 Bolt carrier group and an H buffer.
Do that and you’ll have a very nice AR

encouraging words about the HSA parts, thanks. im leaning towards just the lower now, with a BCM upper. or an YHM lower from Brownells too (see my thread in the custom build area). Anyone else with experience with these parts??

Take a peek at CMMG’s offerings. Good kit at good prices in my experience, at least as good as high standard, but to each their own. I’m not a colt fan as they have no love of the citizen’s right to keep and bear arms, and are only interested in gov’t contracts.

I can’t speak as to the quality of their builds. However, I have sent a few HS parts back to Brownells that were not usable.
