Hi all, I have been looking to get a mid length gas system rifle and have been torn between a 14.5" or 16" barrel. While I think I’ll be using a 16" barrel with a battle comp, I was checking the bravo company web site and found their 14.5" uppers with pinned brakes. In the description it states that these are “specifically tuned to be soft and fast shooting”
I was wondering if the gas port size is different on the 14.5" vs the 16" or if the soft shooting part could be a function of chopping the barrel and keeping the gas port size unchanged. Would this change the recoil characteristics?
I doubt that BCM is going to give away their secret recipe for the 14.5" middies. I have seen the port described as “optimized”. That combined with the softer recoil characteristics would indicate a smaller gas port. BCM fine tuned the port size on these to result in a softer shooting gun, but they also recommend using full power 5.56mm ammo for good reliability. Markm has a great thread going on one of these that he is testing. There may be some specific gas port info there.
BCM will be carrying the BattleComps later this Fall. If you can wait, you could probably get a 14.5" with perm installed BattleComp 1.5 in a couple months. That would be one sweet shooting upper.
