Question about 1+ magnification

I’m still shopping around for my optics. Or probably better said, I’m still trying to decide on my optics. I’ve pretty much decided on something with illumination and variable range that can give me a high end of at least 8-10x. I’m seeing a lot of 3x9s and 2x12s but I’ve also run into several - IOR, USO, Swarovski (probably others) - that offer low ends of around 1.5-1.8x .

I realize that 1.0x is the best choice for CQB type shooting so I’m wondering if it’s worth considering those 1+ low ends or if I should just blow that off and go to a 2-3x low end. The problem I’m having with the 1.0 variables is that there just isn’t enough high end magnification for these old eyes. The Z6i is about the closest thing but the magnification is still a little low and the price is a little high.

So is something like 1.5 or 1.8 worth considering for close range?

It’s very much worth considering. Like anything else which optic you chose is less important than learning how to use the one you choose.

I’ve got a lot of time behind the TR-21 which is a 1.25. I actually preferred it to the TR-24 which is a true 1x.

The slight magnification put you in focus very quickly. While I wouldn’t say it’s as fast as an Eotech or Aimpoint it is faster than irons.

That is dependant on the user. In my tests at close range I found Irons slightly faster than the TR 21 I used to own. In fact at really close range (15 yards or less) Irons were faster than the red dot sights. (good light of course) Now my friend was faster with the TR21 when compared to an Eotech but he was faster with irons at less than 15 yards. Past that point (25 yards, 50 yards and 100) he was faster with the TR 21 vs the irons.

Like I said, which optic you choose is less important than learning how to use the one you do. Everything is a compromise.

At 50-100 yards it will be faster than irons. The BAC (using it as an OEG) actually works pretty well at very close ranges for combat accuracy, in my experience people don’t really put in the practice with it. With a little practice it’s definitely faster than irons.

A 1.+ optic is certainly worth considering depending on the users requirements.

I too have found the BAC concept fairly fast once you get used to it. In my drills with my TA 33 vs my T1 Aimpoint the times were pretty much identical. However when shooting on the move the BAC threw me off a bit. I used to assume that Irons were slower than optics and I found that was not the case at close range. (CQB range) Maybe you can add that to your Sacred Cow list. I also found that the 1911 was indeed faster and more accurate for me than a Glock as well.
