Queen Elizabeth II dies at 96

Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning British monarch whose rule spanned seven decades, died on Thursday at the age of 96, Buckingham Palace has announced.

England has a king again.

She had a hell of a run.

I am convinced she held on so long because she really didn’t want Charles to be King so sad to see.

The old guard is checking out, first Gorbachev and now Queen Elizabeth II. I wonder who number 3 will be. R.I.P. Your Majesty.

Not sure Charles would have been a good king, maybe she was right. Charles seemed to only care about Camilla. The royal family is kind of f’ed up (she was married at the time) but Charles continued the affair at the cost of his own marriage and wife. Diana, being somewhat of an outsider didn’t understand how they roll and it cost her some of her marbles.

You’d think being symbolic monarchs would be a fairly easy gig compared to what most other people have to do for a living, but almost to a person it seems nobody could really handle it. Even uncle Edward abdicated the throne in 1936 because they told him he couldn’t marry a divorced woman and he walked away from all of it in order to marry her and then went to go play with the nazis in Germany then moved to France after the war.

To be honest, he was more German than English on a sunny day.

God Save the Queen

A relic of a bygone era.

I’m going to sit out this season and wait for the next one…

Not to be a dick, and condolences to her family and all, but really who gives a crap

Like I said, sucks if it’s your mom. Bern there. Don’t want to disparage their legitimate grief. But as for me, “Queen died”, Meh.

The entire family was German. They became Windsor in 1917 because the name Saxe-Coburg-Gotha was directly associated with Gotha bombers which were hitting London.

They became the House of Windsor a month later.

I appreciate history and traditions, but I don’t spend much time worrying about the Queen. As a person she wasn’t always very nice and everyone else seems to have been much worse except for Phillip and honestly I don’t understand how he put up with it all.

I felt bad for Diana and all the shit they put her through, I feel bad for her kids after what the family did to their mom. But I honestly worry about the well being of former Page 3 girls than I do the royal family.

Exactly.

Threads like these are always a great opportunity to choose dignity, class, and discourse. Maybe keep this one about the death of the Queen, her legacy, and maybe even honoring the things worth honoring.

Suggest starting a different thread to discuss any angst with the monarchy in general and their antics.

Here is a friend of mine, deceased now…Admiral Frank Kelso, of my little country town in TN. Grew up dirt poor. Kin to me thru marriage.
Pic is from sometime in the 80’s. Commander of the North Atlantic Fleet, I believe was his official title.
I actually asked him about this pic, and he said she & him got along great & she was a great lady.

I have never been an anglophile, though admittedly a bit of a love affair with the Royal Marines after having done an exchange. Apparently that happens to US Marines/corpsmen who do an exchange; the first thing we were told when we came back to CONUS was “we better not catch you wearing that silly little beret!”.

Like any other American I have a real issue with the notion of royalty, sovereignty, and special status because of blood. That said, the queen and I are 12th cousins according to genealogy research, with a whole lot of “Sir” this and “Lady” that in between. I have not met a single one of them. But she was an icon of grace and believed in duty, and her loss–and life–is very meaningful to her countrymen.

All that, including being directly related to the family via genealogy research. I’m going to take the “if I don’t have anything nice to say don’t say anything” approach here, but why anyone cares about the monarchy/royalty from another nation, one we fought a war with to kick the hell out, is a mystery to me. The very term “royalty” makes my skin crawl and always has.

I reject the term and concept of royalty as I do communism, socialism, dictatorship, et al, or anything else that’s the total opposite of Liberty and Freedom, and no amount of nostalgia will change that.

This. When my daughter was a young 'un and obsessed with Disney princesses, I told her straight out that we’re American. We don’t do princesses and royalty and all that tripe. She was too young to understand then, but she now appreciates what I was trying to teach her.

That, is very cool.
