Putting my Ta31rco out to pasture ?

I know this topic is getting old but im looking to replace my ta31rco with a more practical model acog. The 4x is great for steel at 500 yrds but eye relief kind of sux. Looking for something a tad faster in the acog family. The rifle it is going onis my noveske afgan with a role of 0-500 yrds…and wshtf  any input would be appreciated.

Both the TA11 and TA33 are superior to the 31 in the eye-relief department. Still, for the $$ involved, I would steer you toward a decent low-powered variable.

I was about to ask if I should ditch my ACOG altogether in favor of a low-mag variable.

I have heard the ACOG referred to as an “obsolete” optic.

Yea i was thinking 1-4x but had a vortex viper pst and was not to happy with it. The fov was tight and i had left the illumination on over night and killed the battery i know its not an aimpoint but 8hr run time on a low setting :frowning: the ta11hg is looking rather attractive now as is the 33

You can get a Vortex 1-6x or a Nightforce 1-4x, not to mention the Accupoint for around the same amount of shekels.

I’ve long been considering switching from my TR24 to a TA33. Biggest reason is for weight savings and simplicity of the reticle/bdc system.

All comes down to needs, I guess.

Yea that is one thing i dont want to give up is the bdc it works to well :stuck_out_tongue: plus the variable powered optics i have shot through including the nxs 1-4 did not get bright enough to add contrast on a sunny day.

Dinosaur.
Variable.

If anyone has one to sell let me know, I have a clone/training rifle, for guys deploying that could really use one.

So what I’m gathering is, I should just abandon the idea all together of a TA33 and save my pennies up for one of the new 1-6x variables?

Honestly, my two biggest complaints about the TR24 is the lack of usable reticule for BDC and the weight. The weight I can sacrifice for usability, but I want a way to effectively shoot beyond 350 without having to dial turrets.

Don’t necessarily need to go to 1-6. There are some decent 1-4s out there for significantly less than the new 6x hotness, and generally weigh less. The SWFA 1-4 is still good, as are the Vortex offerings if you like the reticle design.
For the cost, you could also try the Bushy 1-6.5, which I have been grooving on, if you aren’t ready to spend Mk6 or Z6i cake.

I tried a few 1-4s and i just keep going back to the acog. my ta31 is not much slower at 50yrds then my T1 i also noticed that i had better shot placement doing snap shots @ 50 and 100 its all about muscle memory and a good cheek weld for me at least. Thats why im thinking of going with a ta33 or ta11 too get some more slack in my shouldering.

It’s your cash dude, do whatever you want, but those that use low powered variables that fit their preferences tend to out-perform other optics solutions across the spectrum of use.

It’s your cash, your time, your gun, and your preference. I’m not the optics police, just relaying my experience with COGs, which ones I prefer, and what works better for the majority of users. Key word to note: majority. Doesn’t mean everyone, there are always outliers. In my time in this business I have learned that the single most important thing is performance (other than clearly poor choices) is that the user sees what they want to see.

I agree…so what variable x would you recommend sub 2000$ with good daytime illumination ?

Ouch.

I don’t know about that. A dinosaur could probably kick ass against most of the land animals alive today.

Beside, if ACOGs are dinosaurs, does that make variables birds? And don’t cats and foxes (and other small mammals) eat birds?

:sarcastic:

The TA31 is easily one of the best intermediate range fixed power scopes ever built, maybe THE best.

I wanted to bump this thread for more input as I found it in a search for a similar topic.

As far as I can tell, there isn’t a 1-4 out with day bright illumination that also has either (1) a useable BDC or (2) useable mil holds for under $1,000.

I’ve had the same thoughts myself but it is tough dumping some clear glass with BDC.

I’ve had a TA 31 for quite a few years and kept it mounted on a carbine during this time. I also have two Carbines set up with M3s. The M3s are faster 0-100 but I fell the ACOG takes over to 450m (As far as I have shot it). I’d like to try a 2 MOA RD, and a MRDS of a 45 offset with the ACOG.

I recently picked up two 1-4s, a Meopta K-Dot and a NF 1-4. I just started using them this past weekend and the NF was disappointing because beyond 125-150 the paralex blurs everything. The NF 1-4 was a temporary solution until I could find a 2.5-10 for a SCAR. The K-Dot battery was dead and made reticle hunting the activity instead of shooting. The jury is still out on the varibles for me. As to a variable optic on the SCAR, or a red dot or a combination on a side mount only time will tell.

Have you tried the cheaper Leupold 1-6 VX6?
