PSA - vtac. Keep or sell?

First time poster here! Keep flames to a minimum :slight_smile:

I bought this rifle from PSA 1 month ago, still hasn’t shipped yet.

I have read one persons thread on here saying their PSA experience was not bad so far.

I do intend to run many many rounds through this gun. I fall into the category of wanting it to be a life saving tool, not a plinker toy.

I sold my bushmaster and upgraded to this. Should I consider selling this after I get it and going to the LE6920?

I will be taking carbine courses in the future when $$ permits. Go easy on me, i’m trying to go in the right direction here!

I wouldn’t have a 6920 on the top of my list and I have an issued one right now in the safe. Carbine gas and carbine length handguards are sooooo 1985. Times have changed, the AR has moved along. This PSA rifle doesn’t say if has mid length gas or carbine but what it does have that is nice is an 11" handguard. I’m not a big fan of the VTAC rail but many here are. It is light, as are the sights.

If I were you I’d do this.

Keep the PSA

Buy a decent stock and pistol grip for it, I am a big fan of Tangodown and Vltor, others here like Magpul. Buy a red dot optic, like a Aimpoint PRO and some ammo and then shoot the hell out of it. The PSA will be easier to upgrade with the low-profile gas block than the 6920 and its carbine FSB.

Would a 6920 be at the top of my list? No, it would be an SR-15. But, a 6920 would def. be above a PSA.

My recommendation is based on the ease of modifying the rifle down the road, the PSA, as configured is the easier route.

I bought a 20" upper from them a while back and have been using it a bit here and there. My other stuff is all BCM, but I have to say I’m impressed with this PSA for the money they ask. So far so good, it has a 5.56 chamber, the barrel is marked HP and MPI 1/7 twist and it only cost me $300 shipped with a hand guard. I’m happy.

I might change my mind but currently I have offset 45 degree iron sights, and a scope that I was going to use for it.

Now that I am more inclined to do tactical training with it, thinking about dropping the scope and offset angle irons.

Well, in the case of you keeping it, you will want to run plenty of ammo through it and work it pretty well before it gets home defense duty anyways. I say give it a go and find out yourself. Who knows, you may get a superb PSA or a Colt that doesn’t deserve it’s pony.

I would keep it and run it unless it gives you a reason not to.

You got a very good rifle coming to you - go out and shoot the hell out of it - and yes it will do the job you want it too! It’s a freaking AR!:rolleyes: Unless you feel the absolute need to go spend thousands more for a name that will do no more then the PSA will!:rolleyes:

I figured you would be along to bash the Colt choice. So please tell the viewers how the OP is going to spend “thousands more” on a name?

For example a Colt 6920 (1100.00 average), remove the Delta ring assy. and then add a Centurion rail (300.00) for example and you have added a few hundred dollars to the price.

Current price of the PSA (out of stock) carbine is 849.00.

I have a PSA middy and it’s been reliable for over 2500 rounds and I’ve run hard at least a couple of times. Go shoot your PSA. You can always sell it later if you don’t like it

I was about to go with PSA as well. Come to find out BCM’s are much better quality for a couple hundred more.

yeah the rifle was originally 950$ I think (or they just put that there to make me think i was getting a great deal) but mostly what attracted me to the rifle is I wanted a free float system. I was going to put mine on my crappy bushmaster but lucky for me, the armorer told me the free float wouldn’t match up to the polymer upper. This lead me to research to just sell it.

And yeah I can just sell it in the future I suppose, but I will give it a shot. Does not look like many guns are depreciating in value right now thankfully.

Shoot what you have, unless it doesn’t work, shoot it some more. Here is the harsh reality of the AR system. If you like it, shoot it, and train with it you WILL not just have one rifle. Once you’ve got enough rounds down range to really know what you want you will make an informed decision about your second rifle.

FN barrel, decent rail, ACT trigger, I would probably hold. Though I prefer my BCM’s, all of the PSA branded, FN manufactured barrels on the complete uppers I do have from them have been good to go. I did get one mid length upper with a canted FSB but other than that PSA/FN uppers have been good overall quality and have run well for me. Good luck.

Along w/ the Colt, BCM and DD in the safe are a few mid-length PSA uppers. The PSA have been problem free and for $300 shipped (w/o BCG or CH) they are a great range/tinkering upper to practice with. Keep it and use it up

OP, I think you got a very nice deal on the PSA. PSA’s reputation seems to be holding water pretty well; and, as has been mentioned, you could spend more money and still get a bad apple (though I would never consider a BCM or a Colt a gamble). In this case, judging the rifle on an individual basis may be best, so do what you need to with it and see how it responds.

Just for some perspective, A BCM 16" LW Midlength w/VTAC 11" alpha is going for ~$650.

I just tried looking at their website and couldnt find it, are you able to point me to where that is…? (or rather were it is for sale with a price listed) I looked on G&R and only found incomplete rifles for about 1k$
