PSA - Battery Acid Dangers

It is spring and the typical spring chores are at hand…don’t do what I just did…While checking the battery fluid levels on my Generac, I stupidly popped off a cap that was difficult to remove and battery acid sprayed all over my face and eyes. :nono:

I ran to the garden hose and immediately flushed my entire face, but there is still a bit of low grade burning sensation in my right eye, so I’m off to the local health care provider to have them check for abrasion and prevent a possible infection as a result.

In addition to shooting, which I always do, please wear your safety glasses when dealing with Batteries. I don’t deal with batteries a lot and didn’t even think twice about wearing safety glasses.

Self nominated for the Darwin Award of the week.

I’ve got a bank of batteries for my off-grid solar setup out of town. I wear gloves, safety glasses, no jewelry, etc. when checking fluid levels or inspecting the battery box. Better safe than sorry.

Hope you check out OK and there’s no damage to your eye.

Ouch. Man I really hope there is no damage done. It is another lesson that even the simple seeming thighs we do can be dangerous.

OP prayers sent. Hope there is no damage.

Thanks for all the kind words. It turns out there were abrasions so they have me on anti-biotic and steroid laced eye drops every 2 hours so it will heal and not get infected.

The prognosis looks good for now,

ETA: Perhaps I should pump some more iron while on these drops or try for an MLB contract!

I have been right next to a automotive 12V wet cell when it blew up. Scary stuff. I wear PPE all day every day at work so it is kind of second nature to me.

Glad to hear good news about a speedy recovery.

Scary stuff, I hope everything is OK OP.

I’ve seen enough batteries blow up during my time in the Army and in my civilian career to have a healthy respect for them. Gloves, goggles (not just eye-pro), remove watches and especially rings, and an apron if you’re going to be working with open acids. I’ve seen batteries in HMMWVs explode in Iraq, seen a man loose a finger from a ring short on an M1 Abrams, seen numerous and lithium polymer and lithium ion batteries ignite or explode.
