Protein

This is for a bug in situation. I use protein powder everyday so I keep a yrs. worth stocked. It is not our only protein source. Not heavy, good for approx. 1.5 yrs(basement around 65F so prob. longer), can get varied flavors. No reason wife and infant couldn’t use if needed. For us, protein pwdr. is a prep staple. Our Wally World carries good brands for good prices. Anyone else doing same?

YES.

I also have used MRP’s for many years & will continue.

Mountain House et alia also sells #10 cans of Egg White powder (Albumin which has the highest P.E.R. known in the universe). Whey protein will work as well just does not have the 4.0 P.E.R.

You can also get White Meat Turkey to BOOST as an additive the bio P.E.R. availability of for meals which I do as well.

Yes. I also use whey protein every day and keep a reserve of it in my food storage.

My wife and I drink a protein shake every day for breakfast. At any given time we have 4 of the big containers from Wal-Mart on hand. It is a good supplement to your diet if the SHTF.

I would also suggest getting a few of the large containers of fiber also. It will help with the diet change in a SHTF situation.

We keep a good stock of protein bars on hand as well. Good for on the go snack and to keep you truckin’.

Another good option is textured vegetable protein (TVP) which can be purchased in a variety of flavors allowing it to be added to just about anything to “beef up” the protein content.

Here’s a sample of the canned dehydrated product with a 5-year plus shelf life: http://beprepared.com/category.asp_Q_c_E_1104_A_Textured+Vegetable+Protein_E_

Works well added to soups, pasta, beans, rice, etc.

Is any brand of protein powder good or are some better than others?

I have found that the local weight lifting/nutrition food stores have clearances on whey and other protein powder drinks.

I picked up a couple 2.5lb tubs of Muscle Milk brand whey protein powder for 75% off just because the expiration date was approx 1 year out. In the event of SHTF I don’t think it is going to matter that my whey isolate protein shake is a few months expired so long as it is in a sealed container.

:stuck_out_tongue:

Yes and no… haha. The best brands are the ones that have BCAA’s in them and the protein comes from egg. Those are expensive though (think $30+/lb of powder).

Some brands like Syntha-6 have BCAA’s and are cheaper but they do have some unwanted ingredients that are not all that great. MyoFusion is an “OK” brand of protein that has BCAA’s & Amino Acids that allow you to actually digest the protein you are eating. Though again it is the cheaper of the line of good protein powders.

Basically look for proteins that have BCAA Amino Acids. If you drink powders that do not you will not really digest the protein enzymes which allow you to benefit from the 30g serving. Protein is hard to digest in the kidneys so be sure to drink lots of water with whatever you are using.

Oh and one more thing… some of these breakfast protein shakes have like 20g or more of sugar and you want to stay away from them. Yeah they taste good and such but they are basically the same as eating a damn candy bar. And these “protein bars” I see people eating off the shelf are horrible. I bought some once w/o reading the label carefully and saw that my bars had 25g of sugar for the 20g of protein. Holy shit I could just eat a damn Snickers bar for that amount of sugar & probably enjoy the Snickers bar.

Anything that has 2g of sugar per 15g of protein is a good rule of thumb.

I use Isopure which is super clean/lean. But in a SHTF event I’m guessing cheaper powders are higher in calories and fat which could be good in that type of a situation.

Thanks for info guys. Guess I’ll do a little shopping around and see what’s available locally. I’ve been really reluctant to get caught up in taking supplements ever day but with such a rigorous PT regiment and none stop outdoor work in -30 it’s getting to me.

As far as protein bars go; Cliff Bar is the way to go. Sugar and fat content is low and they actually taste pretty good.

This. I have a rotation going of Cliff bars in our vehicle GHBs. Wal-Mart sells them by the box so you don’t have to spend and arm and a leg like you would if you picked them from a health food store. I was drawn to them since they are by in large organic.

You can buy Cliff bars even cheaper if you are a Sams member or have access to one!

Cliff bars are a staple of regular life and preps. Keep a shit ton on hand.

Anybody try the cliff builder bars? I really like the peanut butter ones. The chocolate ones dried my mouth out and taste like ass IMO. They do have 20 grams of sugar but I don’t eat much in the way of sweets, fruits or other sugars so I’m not to worried about that.

And while I’m at it what are some good protein powders that can be added to fruit smoothies and be tasteless/blend completely with the flavor and not be “grainy” in texture? My GF likes smoothies but is ULTRA sensitive to unusual taste and textures. What most can tolerate she throws up. She’s not a picky eater by choice. She’s just “lucky” like that.
