My new plate carrier has a Molle cummerbund and I bought a couple of side pouches for my 6x8 side plates along with it, so I can pretty much put them in any spot on the cummerbund. Is there a “proper” placement or preferred position for side plates on a plate carrier? In other words, should they be in the center under the arm, with gaps on either side between it and the front and rear plates, more toward the front plate, or more toward the rear plate? Or is it strictly a matter of preference?
I’m a civilian and the odds of me ever needing to wear this thing are (hopefully) low, and if I do am unlikely to be carrying very much gear on it.
I have always run them towards the front with gaps in the back. Two reasons. One, I figured changes are if I am shot I am more likely to be facing the threat and an off cent shot it would make more sense for the rounds to be striking more towards my front, and two most of the carriers I have run had the side plate areas mounted to where they are skewed towards the front.

Good question, OP. I would tend to think centered is a good choice, but there are plenty of folks more knowedgeable on here. I’m looking at an soft armor (3A) vest with some plate pockets for a similar setup. Anyone heard anything about ProMAX tactical vests?

On topic… Side plates should ideally be worn centered and as high in the armpit as possible to protect the heart/lungs against a lateral entry wound. Often time personal preference and comfort level will dictate wear.
