Can someone tell me the spec or where I can try looking for the spec on the width of the slot in the bolt where the extractor sits? I have a bolt where on the extractor spring end is 0.255" wide and tapers down to 0.244" on the lug end which is too narrow for my extractor of 0.245" width. I’m being told by the bolt maker that the extractor slot is in spec.
The LMT and Colt bolts I have measured have a uniform slot width and plenty of room for the extractor to work.
0.250 + 0.006 means min size of .250 max size of .256, so yes, the .244 is out of spec.
By .006 to .012 depending on which end of the spectrum the slot is machined to.
I have one. I bought it when they first came out. finally got around to using it on a build with a new N4 barrel. It closes on a 5.56 Field Gage. I tried a SP-1 bolt with over 10,000 rounds on it and it would not close, same for BCM bolt and a Fulton Armory bolt (both new and unused). I had made some measurements and a few dimensions were off, though I’ll have to dig it out and do it again, this time recording them.
That was about 7 months ago. Haven’t gotten around to contacting AR performance about it yet. I do have the receipt.
This is definitely not a dig at AR performance. Have gotten good service from them on the few items I’ve purchased.
Actually I didn’t assure you the bolt was in spec I believe I said you could send it back to me a few days ago and i would check it out.
We buy extractors 1000 at a time there are several out of that 1000 that are a little wide or have sharp corners or the pivot pin hole is out of place so we’re use to checking the extractors. We use a .250 end mill (actually 2 different ones) in 2 steps rough and finish to cut the extractor slot in the bolts and yes we machine the bolts in house.
The DOD drawing does show the rear of the slot behind the pivot pin being slightly larger. So again just so we are clear, you can send the bolt back so I can check it, if the extractor or bolt is off I will deburr it or replace it but I can’t do that until you send it back if you choose to do so.
this is what I told you a few days ago on the 6th when you first said something to me. Have you sent the bolt back yet?
"There is .020 clearance between the bolt lugs and the extension lugs, .002 isn’t going to make any difference.
The extractor slot is wider in the rear of the bolt than the front by design so it will pivot. The extractor should be less than .250 since the slot is .250.
If the extractor is tight or sticking in the front of the bolt send the bolt back and I’ll pick through the extractors to find a thinner one."
The ejectors and extractors are made by the same company that makes Colts and FNs they are all machined so they are not like the MIM parts like DPMS if that is what you are use to when you say they had sharp edges. The springs come from a DOD contractor also.
If you had emailed me direct or called us you may have had faster results since I don’t browse through forums looking for your posts. If other customers hadn’t linked me to your threads I would have never known you had an issue.
