Proper Barrel installation

THe recommended torque for barrel installation ins 30ft/lbs right?
Is there a way to achieve exactly this much torque with the most basic barrel wrench?
Or could it be done by feel and simply make sure its not too tight and all the holes line up for the gas tube?

Appendix F, TM 05538C-23&P/2. 31 FT LBS MIN. DO NOT EXCEED 80 FT LBS TO ALIGN SLOT

Thanks!

32ftlbs isnt a lot of toque. its basically just a firm pull. if you cant drop the $20 for a walmart torqewrecnh, just molly it up, tighten firmly, losen, tighten, loosen, and tighten it up firm- no straining- and then tighten it till the gas tube goes through.

THe moly suggestion sounds good. The reason why I ask is that the barrel wrench available to me at the moment is the long type that doesnt have provisions for attaching a torque wrench.

buy the PRI bbl nut wrench. its only $20.

If you have the proper tools and mechanical ability it shouldn’t be too difficult. When it comes to the torque thing this is one of the few times that I deviate from the 23&P. I insert the barrel, tighten the nut x 2 w/o anti-seize and then on the third time I apply the anti-seize and tighten it down. I do not use a torque wrench, but by feel alone. The important thing is to get a good line up of the gas tube hole and don’t back off the nut to get them to line up. YMMV.

sir… sorry for the noobish question but why do you have to tighten and loosen 2x ? why not tighten immediately.

I’ve been shooting for quite some time. this time. Im building. the parts are arriving. should be able to start assembling by feb. just curious about the barrel installation.

I mates the threads of the barrel nut and receiver so you get more consistent clamping

so you do this only to the new barrels right? if it’s an old barrel no need?

old or new barrel you need the moly grease right?

You probably don’t need to do it to used ones, I do it because it is (muscle memory) and that way I stay consistent. You should use anti-seize on the threads always. YMMV.

so tightening and loosing needs anti sieze grease like moly right?

Get Moly fortified wheel-bearing grease.

alright… i’ll give it a try.

Just put together an new upper, I just grabbed what available grease (looks like general purpose and red colored) nearby and used it to coat the threads. Any downsides for not using anti-seize or moly grease?

it’s ok cebu boy. I have molybdenum disulfide.used as airgun grease. this is what glenn use to use when installing barrels. but… where’s glenn now?

You want to make sure that whatever grease you use does not have graphite in it.

Moly grease is used because of it’s high temp resistance. “Any ole grease” may not have the same high temp resistance and therefore may cook off the first time you heat up the barrel.

People here recommend using moly grease or some sort of anti-seize without graphite…

I used I think lithium automotive general purpose grease red in color, forgot what band…

Glen moved to Davao.

Oh, ok will take it apart and use the correct grease, thanks.

better get to it quik cebu boy… If im not wrong, you’ve shot a lot of rounds on it already.
