I just installed an extractor upgrade kit and tried it with and without the o-ring and it fails to eject when hand cycling the bolt with the charging handle. Before putting the kit in, it ejected just fine (blue insert, stock spring that came with the Stag BCG). Now the round just stays attached to the bolt face because the extractor is holding it in. Is it supposed to do that when hand cycling the bolt?
I do have a plastic dummy round that ejects just fine whereas the live rounds don’t.
Hmm, let me see if I can answer this in terms even i can understand. The extractor upgrade kit basically increases the clamping force on the rim of the cartridge case. Basically the kit was designed to improve extraction with the faster cycle times of the shorter weapons, there was a problem with the old spring insert combo where the claw would pop off the rim of the case because of the accelerated rearward movement of the BCG. The extra force applied to the rim prevents this.
You’re asking about ejection, the extractor really nothing to do with ejection except getting the fired case out of the chamber so it can be.
I’m guessing you are cycling the action by hand very slowly? is that correct? The problem will more than like go away when you fire it.
I’m cycling the action with a moderate amount of force; not quite going slow, but definitely not close to what it would be during firing. I guess since the plastic dummy round ejects nicely, that it probably won’t be a problem.
I experienced the same thing that you did when installing the kit on several bolts. Make sure that the spring is fully seated in it’s seat when installing. This is done easily by using a pair of needle nose pliers. After seating the spring the problem is gone.
IMHO when the spring is not fully seated it binds the extractor so it will not pivot to release the round as easily as normal.
The BCM kits work great but need to be installed correctly to function.
Just remember that the upgrade kit is NOT meant for Mid Length Gas Systems. (16" and longer barrels.) You will probably experience excessive extraction tension. The upgrade kits are for 14.5" barrel systems and shorter. If your weapon runs without the upgrade, this is telling you something. You can run a heavier spring and black buffer insert, and should be good to go, but when you replace your extractor spring, it’s a good idea to replace your ejector spring as well to compensate for the extra extractor tension.
