It seems like a lot of people’s preference for mounting slings is with a QD swivel mount. Personally, I like fixed mounts on the rifle, so that it isn’t moving around and/or tangling up.
I haven’t done any classes or used my slings in any extreme matter, so maybe I am missing out on what advantage QD or swivel mounts provide?
I like the anti-rotation QD sockets better than the fixed swivels.
Largely a matter of lower profile when the QD swivel is removed. Also, if you have a favorite sling it is quicker to move from rifle to rifle (okay, honest, that was a reach).
There may come a time when the most expedient thing to do is detach from the weapon by pressing a QD swivel button.
Additionally, some folks like convertible 1 point to 2 point slings, QD swivels are the basis for many of them.
I’m left handed, one daughter is right handed, the other is left handed. In setting up a shotgun for them, it is fairly easy to get an ambi front sling point, rear mounts that are usable are often mounted on the side of the stock, QD sockets are lower profile on each side, and the QD swivels make switching easy-peasey.

I actually didn’t even know they had fixed swivels until you mentioned it right now. Is that dependent upon the swivel or the mount itself that allows it to be fixed?

Rotation limited QD work great - that bit of rotation can keep slings from binding, especially in odd positions. Rotation limiting keeps them from getting twisted. Being able to reconfigure how a weapon is slung on the fly can be invaluable in some situations, but it’s always a nice to have feature. The fact that a VCAS Padded QD sling and stock/endplate/handguard combinations that can mount them end up being lighter for marginally more cost made it easy to settle on that combination as the ideal answer for me.
Quality limited rotation QD mounts for me.
I only use Midwest Industries heavy duty (flush button) swivels, and I’ve used them with their integral handguard mounts, their bolt-on 1913 and AK mounts, as well as BCM’s end plate, keymod, and stock mounts. Never had one come out when I didn’t want it to. Never had a problem with Magpul mounts either, but I don’t like that they can rotate all the way around.
What are some good rotation limited QD for slings? I run vcas the standard vcas slings on all of my rifles, except for one which has a vtac sling, which I purchased accidentally when I confused vtac with vcas.
The mount is what limits rotation, not the swivel. So you can use any quality swivel with your VCAS slings, just attach the sling to the swivel the same way you would any fixed swivel or slot, and then run the mount of your choice. How is your rifle currently setup? That’ll really determine which mounts you use.
No particular rifle, just interested in possibly testing or playing around with different set ups.
Well, just speaking for me here, I use these swivels (#114HDFS), and on Rifle #1, I’m using a BCM KeyMod mount and endplate, and on Rifle #2, I use the rear-most integral handguard mount, and the outside point on the stock.
I prefer the sling at the rear of the handguard, and either the endplate or on the outside of the stock. Shoulder transitions are easy, I can move the rifle around and reload or clear malfunctions without a problem, and still cinch it down across the chest. It really is all preference though, so wherever you prefer your sling mounted already, that’s where you should start with. You can find a QD mount to fit just about anywhere on an AR.
You can get QD mounts for an A2 FSB, M4 plastic fantastic stock, a number of QD endplates, handguard mounts for just about any handguard, receiver extension mounts, etc.
I like the QD sockets. Of these the anti-rotation are the best.
I use everything on different rifles…fixed mounts and QD points. I even have an AR SBR with a QD forward mount and fixed aft mount.
I don’t expect to ever need the QD aspect of my slings, but it’s nice to have considering it doesn’t detract from the rifle, only add to it (it’s a rail mount in my case).
Give the choice I’m fairly even on them…a QD sling could somehow malfunction I guess, but it’s low enough on my concern list I don’t even think about it. I use QD for my modern ARs and AKs and fixed for my M1As, WWII guns, retro ARs, etc.
I use fixed on some, QD with limited rotation on others and paracord attachment on others.
Never thought about paracord. I have the blue force universal loop while on some rifles, which I guess is somewhat of a similar idea/though.
I use to really like the rotation limited QD swivels until I started using a WOTG sling.
I prefer a qd mount when able. I use a vltor qd swivel and a DD qd rail socket on my guns w/out built in QP sockets. Also used the magpul ms3 sling with the rail sling attachment and been very happy with it.
Back before they invented the QD mounts and other such modern things, it was either 550 cord or the as issued location/method.
I prefer rotation-limited QD, all my rifles are set up to accept QD swivels. I’ve done the same for my issued rifles when I was active duty. The best setup IMO is a VCAS or Huskey 2 point mounted into a QD endplate and at at integrated QD mounted at the rear of the handguard. For a more stable shooting platform standing I also add a QD mount at the front of the handguard if it doesn’t come with one and mount the rear into the right side QD mount of the buttstock. I hate it when rails only have integrated QD mounts at the rear only or none at all!
Rotation limited QD preference here as it is purty much all I use.
