Kyle,
I’d appreciate your input on the performance differentials between a 1-4 optic vs a 2.5-10 optic. Generally speaking, most folks would draw that as the line between a Recce (1-4) and an SPR (2.5-10). Do you ever feel like there is a time when you’d prefer to have the additional magnification when working with the 5.56? Perhaps you could throw some distance numbers on each optic, say 1-4 for 400M max, 10X gains you out to 600?
You pretty much nailed it. 400 for 1-4, 600 for 10X- but you’ll have to have a really accurate bullet like 77 gr black hills to get out to 600 on a human tgt, and only moderate wind.
I prefer no turrets because I don’t/have never dialed, I generally use a hold, and at 400 and in you only need to know about 3 holds total to hit throughout the spectrum.
We never gave any definition as far as ‘recce’ or ‘spr’ goes. That’s all Internet naming games that came later. The older guys like me called it a “sniper m4”, “scoped m4”, etc. Later on guys would call it MK 12 but those dudes were a generation behind us and the gun had been made that designation by Crane already…so you can kinda tell when a guy went through sniper school with that.
All in all I like the U.S. Optics I have now better than the NF and Leupold I ran in the Teams for the reasons of simplicity, using at close distances, and being more bombproof. With the current issued NFs you’ll have to have 3 gun irons or a micro at 45* to be able to be effective up close- not wrong, just more complicated.
Kyle, when using a conventional magnified scope (say, 2.5-10X or more magnification), what is your preference for back up sights?
Mini red dot (which model?) or some sort of BUIS?
In the case of the red dot, do you prefer it mounted on top of the main scope (still viable if the turrets are not too talll), or offset at 45º?
I’ve seen this 45º BUIS from Knights. Does it make any sense? I can’t imagine shooting at 600 m with the stock twitsted 45º in my shoulder, and in case you deviate from a specific sight ratio the elevation settings are going to be way off. Perhaps a fixed BUIS set at 200 m would be better?
Kyle, as a follow-up question, do you consider only the Dual Focal Plane USO scope to be the one to have? Would you consider the other reticle options to be viable? (they cost less)
Outside of that option what would you consider the best 2nd?
