Practice course setup for 3 gun

Hi thanks for reading. I’m deployed now but I want to start shooting 3-gun when I get home. I have the basic idea of what it’s about be I’ve never been to a match. I find myself with plenty of ammo to practice with but I need to build a practice range. I want to make some barriers/obstacles and come up with some courses of fire but I need some ideas from some of you guys that are familiar with 3-gun matches. Anyone have any ideas?

Here’s what I’m working with: A 100m range, a 25m zeroing/ pistol range, and ruin about 3 or 400 meters that I can shoot at. I can have the carpenter on my fire base make barriers out of wood but I need to be able to pick them up and lock them up after using them so they don’t become firewood.

Thanks for your input.

That’s a good question, right there.

You probably don’t need a whole lot of obstacles. I have two VTAC barricades, two Bianchi barricades, and a few shooting boxes. I also have some steel mini-poppers and long-range plate targets. With these, you can set up a pretty good approximation of any shooting situation you’re likely to encounter.

Practicing for 3-gun is a whole 'nother deal, and could fill a good-sized book. First priority is to confirm your holdovers from 5 yards out to 300, at least. I see a lot of shooters losing point because they don’t know where to hold out past 100 yards. I practice a lot of position shooting with the rifle (prone, rollover and SBU prone, reverse kneeling, offhand) on targets from 100-400 yards. Shooting on the move out to 100 yards. Lots of barricade and small-port shooting.

If you have access to wood pallets they are easy to customize for barricades with different shaped slots, etc. I haven’t been to any of the Big Name 3Gun shoots, but the ones I have been to are organized by guys who do compete in them and I haven’t seen too much similarity between matches.

If you train to shoot from as many different positions and barricades and port positions and shaped ports (canted 45 & 90 degree) as possible and with your mil background you should be competitive against like gear when you get back. Then you can get into the gear race if thats your thing;)
