PPQ or Glock 19 gen 4

Ok folks I was at a lgs to see if they had any ammo in stock, much to my surprise  they had none. However I saw a PPQ 9mm I think it’s an m2 not sure I heard they discontinued the first version?
Anyway I been reading how it’s the best polymer out there, Never shot one although I like the trigger a lot! I also saw a gen 4 g 19 which felt good too. I put a down payment on the ppq because I can’t find one anywhere. But here’s my dilemma, I own 4 glocks, and have plenty of magazines I been buying the past few years, I have a gen 3 g 19 but having btf issues I was thinking of putting it toward a trade for the ppq, but Mags for the ppq are scarce as the gun itself. I’m hoping for an end to this panic buying, ( as I’m sure everyone else is) and hope things get back to normal and I’d be able to stock up on ppq mags. Should I stay with the glock or go ppq any thoughts?

I have a Gen 2 19 a Gen 4 19 and a PPQ. I have to say that I absolutely love them all!
Here are my observations…
Glocks:
Pros: Easy to find sights, holsters, magazines and other standard accessories.
Cons: Some still have ejection issues.
Walther PPQ:
Pros: Great trigger, great ergos, points beautifully and is more sexy than the block.
Cons: Lighter faster slide so it seems like it has more recoil. Very few options for sights right now and all of the rear sights are going to be loose. I had to have a custom holster made to my liking. I ordered 3 magazines when I bought the pistol in December 2012 and Paid $120 for them. I have yet to receive them.

Yeah that’s what I figured, I didnt even know about the rear sight being loose, although I believe Raven concealment makes a holster for the ppq

Long time Glock shooter, I prefer the PPQ and P99 now, but handguns are an awfully personal thing. And Glock is so common that any parts, accessories, etc. are easier to find. I’d shoot the PPQ if there’s anywhere to rent one, you might love it.

I had a PPQ for a few months, and have had a Gen4 19 for quite a while now. The PPQ does have probably the best trigger I’ve ever used on a striker fired handgun; but my investment in Glock hardware (magazines, holsters, spare parts) was the overriding factor for me to not hang on to the PPQ.

As far as the Gen4 19 goes, I do prefer the new style magazine release (especially the Vickers version), reduced grip size and the grip texture. Mine doesn’t pop me in the head either. I’m not going to swap out all my other Glocks for Gen4s but going forward they would be my preference.

And that’s kinda where I’m at I invested so much into glocks. It’s kinda like how American cars used to be, plenty of parts around, and easily customized and easy to work on yourself.

I’m very happy with my PPQ, but I practically had to make it a part-time job to find extra mags for it. That said, if you’re diligent and patient, they do come into stock. Things should improve with Walther America coming on line.

Sights and holsters can be found as well, it just requires a little more time searching.

I have a PPQ and a Gen 3 G19. I’d go for the PPQ every single time. My G19 basically just sits in the back of the safe on backup duty. To be fair, it ended up there because of the BTF issue, but even after that issue was completely fixed with an Apex extractor, finally, I was too impressed with the PPQ to even consider going back to the Glock.

Downside to the PPQ, magazines. I have plenty, but they are still hard to find. Sights and holsters are not an issue for me in any way. Love the Dawsons. For me, magazine availability does not in any way make my G19 a preferable gun to carry or take to the range. Haven’t even taken it out of the safe for months.

I know this is what you meant, but to be clear, the factory sights that come with the PPQ are not loose.

I just don’t see recoil as a problem

Not sure what you mean about the rear sights being loose. I hand-fitted my own Dawson Precisions. Tapped 'em in, loctited the set screw…no loosening issues.

I have 12 magazines acquired here and there with little difficulty. Some are Walthers, some are Magnum Research Eagles.

My range holster is a Blade Tech. I also made my own kydex RCS-knockoff, but my favorite is a $50 DeSantis Speed Scabbard.

I never gave the Dawson’s a look to be honest. I did not know that they had a set screw. I have seen the Meprolites and Trijicons and they are loose but have no screw.
Recoil is not a problem for me BUT there is more felt recoil compared to the Glock 19.
I will only ever use magazines that are from the manufacturer. That is just a personal thing. I have several guns to choose from so I don’t mind waiting for Walther mags.

As far as the magazine thing goes, it’s my understanding that the Walther mags and Magnum Research mags are both from the same manufacturer (Mec-Gar). The finish is slightly different on the body, the MR follower is black instead of red, and the floor plate is stamped differently. I have eight MR mags for my PPQ (plus the two originals) and haven’t had any problems with them yet. Unfortunately I haven’t had the chance to put tons of rounds through them though. Noone on the Walther Forums has reported any issues with them.

I’ve put over 1000 rounds through my PPQ without regard to whether I’m using the MR9 mags or the Walthers. They’re identical except as noted above. Both made by MecGar. The MR9 frame is a Walther PPQ frame, made in Ulm, identical in all respects to the Walther.

Thanks for all the input guys

After reading this, I want one… haha

PPQ without question. But I am biased as I won’t buy gLoCkS.

Between the PPQ and the 4th gen 19, I give the nod to the PPQ. I had a 4th gen, and had no issues with it whatsoever, but the trigger was different than my third gens. The pull and break was different, and the recoil impulse on the 4th gen was different. I have been shooting 3rd and 2nd gens for a long time and prefer their characteristics to the 4th gen. I do like the 4th gen mag release, but that’s about it.

Between the PPQ and a 3rd gen 19, well that is a tougher choice for me. In factory garb, I would go with the PPQ. Yes the aftermarket is limited for the PPQ currently, but I believe it will catch up with their US presence now. Aside from a good set of nights sights and a good duty and off duty holster there isn’t much I need for a PPQ.

My G19’s are modified with reductions, night sights and 3.5 OEM Glock connectors. I love them they way they are, but they are far from factory. I can shoot a factory Glock just fine, but much prefer my modified ones.

Reliability and durability seems to be pretty equal between the two. I know the Glock has been around longer but the PPQ design has been around a while as well. It isn’t a totally new platform, and from my personal experience and what I have read, it’s reliability is excellent.

As someone else said, the way a pistol fits and performs for a particular shooter is directly related to their perception and abilities. What works for me may not work for others and vise versa. I would also recommend going to the range and shooting both to see which one you prefer and perform better with. Then decide what your intended use for the pistol is going to be, CCW HD or Duty. Armed with that information you can make a well informed decision.

On a side note I do own both Glocks, and a PPQ, and shoot both equally well. Even with my Glocks grips modified, the PPQ still feels better ergonomically.

I’m not sure where I read this, but I understand Walther makes the frame for Magnum Research’s version of the Walther AS so I’m not surprised the magazines are interchangeable between the two.

If I had to come up with a list of the PPQ M2 shotcomings:

  1. No magazines for the M2 will be available until late april at the latest. Mec-Gar is just way behind schedule making them. Original PPQs are now starting to get resupplied with mags. The current MR mags are NOT interchangeable with the M2. Only the original.

  2. There is a greater recoil impulse. It ain’t bad at all, hardly noticable, but it’s there. You can mitigagte is some with an aftermarket guide rod. Another option is to wait till bout June for the PPQ Navy (4.5) to come out.

  3. Holster selection for the M2 ain’t the greatest. However grab yourself some Kydex, follow the thread on making your own and you’re good to go. That’s what I’m going to do to adapt my COMP-TAC Minotaur since they don’t have plans for an M2 holser.

Other than that I have nothing negative to say about the pistol. The factor mags are not lose in the slightest. As soon as magazines for the M2 become available I’m selling my remaining M&P 9mm FS. For other thoughts and observations check out THIS thread.

OP, if I were in your shoes, I would get the PPQ.

I am a dyed in the wool Glock guy, but if you already have it and you have your bases covered with other guns.

I would try something new. See if it improves your game. If it does, roll with it.

If it doesn’t sell it and get something else.

I wouldn’t, however, trade in anything that I was currently using and could use effectively until I was sure that I could use the new weapon at the level I needed to be at to be comfortable with my performance.

If I ever find anything that fits in the G19 envelope (size, weight, capacity) and is DA/SA and hammer fired, I am going to buy it and give it a go myself. It is always good to expand your horizons.
