These are Level IV ICW 6" x 8" ballistic side plates from PPI. They are first quality ceramic plates with aramid (Kevlar) backing wrapped in a black cordura for protection from the elements. It is a svelte 3/4" thick, and weighs in at approximately 2.8 lbs.
Cross-torso GSW’s are considered one of the most damaging possible, as it can simultaneously hit any combination of your lungs, spine, heart, major arteries and worst of all that rib cage tattoo that took 8 sessions to complete. Side Plates can mitigate cross-torso GSW risk, and both soft and hard side armor has been responsible for countless fragmentation saves on the battlefield, as well as reducing blunt trauma injuries that would have resulted in broken ribs.
Some side plates on the market are made of hardened steel and for those of you who have read our opinions on steel plates, suffice to say, we do not recommend or carry them. Steel plates are made to stop rounds by 100% deflection of the striking projectile- which means that 100% of a bullet will go somewhere other than the plate- significantly increasing the risk of secondary missile injury into very vulnerable unprotected areas on the wearer. Quality ceramic plates work by absorbing the energy of a striking projectile through destruction of the ceramic tile (and deformation of the projectile shape), and then by capturing the projectile in the backing material built into the plate.
The plate we are offering is the PPI 6" x 8" 2803 Ceramic Plate. This plate has been tested to stop M2 .30-06 Armor Piercing (per NIJ 0101.04 protocol) when used in conjunction with IIIA armor. This side plate was originally offered by PPI at $179 each.
