Hey, Check it out–post 556:eek:

Anyhow, how common is it for the pawl on the forward assist to break? And what may be the typical cause if any?

I ask because I’ve never really heard of them going down and we had 3 pool guns that had them break.

Mark

Cant say that I have ever heard of them breaking as a common thing.

You have AR’s that are…pool guns?

Yeah, you know, the ones you use in the pool in case the zombies know how to swim. By the way, can you shoot them under water?

Not quite what I was thinking of…but thats even more…

Only way I could think one might break is to have so much goo get into the forward assist tube and it forced the pawl forward causing it to drag on the side of the bolt carrier.
It is that or somebody is pushing in on the forward assist while somebody else is drawing the bolt back and letting it fly forward catching the end of the pawl and snapping it.

Anybody been complaining about AR15s and demanding the force should be buying SiG 550s because M16s are junk, blah blah, blah???

No, on the 550 stuff. They get taken in and out of the racks alot. That’s the only thing I canthink of other than maybe someone is really hitting hard when loading and maybe it’s catching the rack somehow, ramming the fa forward.

Make - and vintage?

I’ve never seen one break in 20+ year with more than a half million rounds downrange by me - and several more million watched go down…

Anything can happen - just wierd when those monkeys do finish Shakespeare…

There was some so called “expert” quoted on TOS a few years back. He was sighted as saying they should be disabled because if some pin breaks or something the pawl will lock the gun up really bad.

I forget the exact scenario that this expert layed out. But it seemed irrational in the big picture to me.

Kevin, They’re Bushmaster A1’s 16" Adjustable stocks, right about a year and a half. The vehicle racks have the plate right around the end of the receiver, that’s why I’m thinking they may be taking a smackthere.

Same here, I’ve never seen one break either, that’s very odd to have three.

Then I start thinking, do you ever know that guy who always seems to have stuff break on his gun? NOw, I have to find out who that guy is in this case.

Mark

Mark,

Since they are all similar lineage my guess would be a combo of both a heat treating/QC issue on the parts - and the way it sits in the rack, and takes hits from it. I know guys who have shot AR’s with the F/A held in to act as a bolt lock when shooting suppressed  - and they did not break them that way (at least when I saw it).

Thanks Bub!
I wonder when the first Caveman broke a rock that he was supposed to throw at the beast.
