Went to chang the pistol grip from stock to a tango down. And now it seems the threads may be stripped or screw thread is stripped pistol grip is on but will not tighten all the way. and cannot seem to be able to back it out to remove the grip . slight woble in play this is on a colt 6920 lower ANY IDEAS
Drill it out and tap to the next larger size or drill it out and install a helicoil. Otherwise have it welded closed and re-drill and tap.
can you inspect it with the PG removed, see how well it screws in?

Well almost got the screw out, next step cut the grip off and try and use channel locks finish removing it. it’s in pretty good . when i drill and tap out if needed should i go with a 5/16 and go course or fine thread?? im hoping that a 1/4-28 tap will clean it up but it does not feel like it.
What I would suggest is to go to a hardware or a good auto parts store and buy a helicoil [I use the term in a generic way] which is a kit that has an insert that you drill then tap then insert the [helicoil insert] which restores the hole to proper size and is stronger new. We use them at work often to repair stripped aluminum threads. http://www.helicoil.in/

While you are at the hardware store pick up some 1/4x28x1" allen head screws and toss those flat blade screws.
Yes a helicoil will return it to it’s proper size. I’ve used them on head bolts on engines, so they are a strong fix. With the Magpul grips they apply thread locker to their screws, I don’t know if Tango Down does the same thing. It’s an ass pain to get them in all the way at times. Your threads my be just fine.
Thread seems a little bit ruff got it out tho.

With the grip off… Can you thread the bolt back in? The factory Colt slotted bolt, lock washer and a big flat blade screwdriver have always worked OK for me. With the lock washer they don’t really need to be terribly tight or require thread locker… One thing you don’t want to do is to pull the grip on with the bolt. Use as polymer dead weight hammer to seat the grip. IMO… Putting a real hex head or Torx in there is just “poking the sleeping tiger”. Ron
If the thread is rough you should be able to clean it up with a 1/4-28 bottom tap
Threads are rough may have to Clem them up a bit. Also trying to get ahold of colt to see bout sending it there. Sucks never had a lower do this before. It’s only about 2 maybe 3 weeks old

This is the worst advice.
7075 aluminum is a non-weldable alloy.
This is what I would do.
After, of course, I tried a different screw.
Different screw tried with no positive results. Lower is three weeks old going to try and contact colt. Just to see what they say
Forgot to mention that the original screw would loosen on its own with the oem grip on.
Very easy fix with heli-coil. Will be stronger and better then new. I would do it for you in N.E. Ohio for free in the shop I work for. Find a local machine shop, you may find a good guy who’s into ar’s to help you out. Should be done on a quality machine but can be done with a hand drill but only by an experianced person.
