My father just handed me down a Poly Tech (Mfg. in Beijing China) imported by KFS, Atlanta GA.
Model is: AKS-762
I think this may be a preban (1994) but not sure… Anyone have any insight as to what I have here?
I’m thinking that I may want to do some upgrades to it… Rail, TD grip and a Bulgarian left side folding triangle stock… Bolton Gas Block??? (Americanize it if you will…)
Am I crazy to do this to this rifle? Not really sure what I have here…
Tried some internet / forum searching but came up empty.
if it still has the bayonet lug and not a thumbhole stock it is a pre ban and a holy grail of AKs I had many polytechs they are some of the best out there and are worth a pretty penny
They look like a pair of little fangs right behind the compensator and are part of the front sight tower.
If you have a slant compensator on it (duck bill) and you can unscrew it, it is most likely a preban. The transitional imports had to have those removed and replaced with a nut that was then welded on and a butthole stock added so they could be imported.
Pics would be great. I believe that it is quite possibly pre-ban and I advise you not to mess with it or at least make sure to keep all of the parts on hand as they are pretty collectible.
It’s a preban based on the model number. How about a picture? Assuming it’s a preban, you’d be crazy to tinker with it. You could easily sell it, get what you want and have money left over.
Even if it’s a postban rifle, it’s still a Chinese which is significantly different from the Bulgarian European AKM pattern. You’d still be better off selling it and getting what you want. Otherwise you’d spend a big chunk of money just on the conversion labor.
I believe the Pre-Ban all have folding Bayonets. Three sided Spike or Blade.
Fact,
K.F.S. Importers were owned by a few U.S. Congressmen.
They were big importers of Chinese AK-47, SKS, Tin’s of Copper wash 7.62x39 ammo etc.
Before Bill Clinton signed the Assault Weapons Ban he waited until they unload Three Ships from China. The Chinese had their own Port to unload, located at Persido?, spelling, California.
Then the Chinese paid Bill $8 million for his patience.
They later discovered some of the AK’s were select Fire or Full Auto. Just like in Vietnam.
You Youngsters on the forum were probably not born when this happened.
Don’t trust me, go find more info. Ask any older Firearm person.
My $.02
Dear God! Please don’t ruin a stock Poly. Post some pics so we can see what you have. Poly’s are great AK’s and if its decent, it really shouldn’t be messed with. I believe most Poly’s were Pre Ban guns with only a few exceptions.
If you really want a modern AK, I’ll trade you an Aresnal with an Ultimak GT on it and so you can go to town.
You don’t see them around anymore. Pre Bans are had to find.
Like the Gentleman said, Please leave it like you found it.
I have an Arsenal with a Milled receiver. I just wished I had kept one of the Chinese. They were less than $300.00 new. SKS’s were less than $80.00. I also had less money.
If times weren’t so crazy I’d ask for suggestions on a “project” rifle that I could work on for upgrades but with prices and availability so crazy I won’t even bother.
I just called him and asked him where he got it… Said he traded a guy an early model handheld aviation GPS back in 1994. They guy called him about a month later and said he wanted the rifle back…
My guess was this was around the time of the first AWB.
This one is in a gun shop somewhere in Port St.Lucie, FL. My Dad sent me these poor quality pics Saturday morning. They are asking $3200 with a 100 rd Chinese drum, several mags, original sling, etc. Dad talked the guy down to $2700, but still left it there (much to my disappointment). It is my understanding that both these patterns were imported together.
