What is your all-around favorite/go-to upper configuration that is non-NFA?
I have found the 16" Lightweight Middy to be the best mix of weight, balance, velocity, accuracy and ability to modify (no pinned muzzle device). I do think the standard 14.5" Middys LOOK the best though…
To me nothing swings and stabilizes for offhand shots quite just like a 14.5 M4. While having to have a pinned muzzle device isn’t the greatest… there are only a few muzzle devices I’d put on my rifles anyways. 14.5 carbine gets my vote for my go to gun and favorite configuration.
I simply don’t understand the benefits of having a 14.5" barrel with a pinned muzzle device to meet NFA requirements vs. a standard 16" barrel.
A standard A2 flash hider adds about an 1" to the overall length of a 16" barrel. Yet, with a pinned 14.5" barrel, you have to use an extended flash hider to meet the NFA requirements, so you’re basically cutting 1.5" of barrel away to save 1" in overall length. I simply do not see what advantage saving 1" in overall length affords you.
Honestly, none of these silly questions would ever happen if our laws weren’t so ridiculous. As long as I was in a sane state, I would much rather just go ahead and SBR one of my lowers so I could try out 10.5" - 12.5" uppers instead.
That being said, I think a Tavor is a superior option to most other SBRs, since you get an overall length equivalent to a 10.5" AR but still have a 16" barrel.
I voted OTHER because my fav is an MRP. I Can have all those barrel-lengths and weights in one upper.
This is going to be mostly personal preference, of course, but if I had to pick one, the 14.5 standard profile, carbine gas would be the best all around from 600 meters to CQB.
having owned most lengths and weights, I definitely prefer lightweight barrels whenever possible, and i like the advantages of a midlength gas system with a 16" barrel.
I voted 14.5 Mid LW, but that’s only for 5.56. Which is why I will eventually have a .300 Blackout 8-10.5" also. No idea of the optimal barrel length for .50 Beowulf, but suspect I may need to find out.
I voted 16" middy but I like mine in the BCM ss as I value accuracy over barrel life for my AR use. Still want a light weight bfh upper for a harder use upper.
I like the 16" middy, but then again I’ve only handled three on your list. I did a lot of reading and changed my mind multiple times deciding whether to go with the BCM BFH 16" Mid Length vs the BCM BFH 16" Mid Length Lightweight. In the end I decided against the light weight…for now. Wish I could say I’ve tried them all.
