I agree with most of what you say. i used to consider Teddy a great president till my interest in him got me reading more on him. I won’t try to change your mind but you might read “Imperial Cruise” or many others books about him and it may change your opinion of Teffy. Imperial Cruise is a well written, easy to read book that looks at one of the major constitutional trespass’ that quite possibly lead us to where we are today.
I vote Republican because their candidates are the closest to what I believe with a realistic chance at taking office.
But of all the political parties and philosophies that have come and gone in our Countries history, I most identify as a Jeffersonian (r)epublican and Jefferson the man.
I don’t believe that social issues have relevance to Government.
I believe that we should live under the rule of law and not of men.
I believe you should be free to do what you want as long as it doesn’t affect me in even the smallest way.
I believe that there should be an equality of force, when it comes to bearable arms, between the people and the government.
People often confuse authoritarianism with current leftist/progressive views, because they can only be accomplished with an authoritarian government. The two (authoritarianism and leftism) have been successfully blended together that just having one promotes the other, making the left vs right argument worthless.
You can’t have an authoritarian government protect your rights, regardless of whether it’s left or right oriented. Same with a strong leftist government - the requirements to make that system work require a large government, which by definition removes rights from the people.
To your original post, you never struck me as leftist as much as you do a interventionist/authoritarian.
I used to identify as a Republican. Now, after two election cycles and studying history for the last several years, it’s apparent that there’s not a dime’s difference between Democrats and Republicans. Both parties are authoritarian to the core and want the same oppressive, big government and big taxes, they just can’t agree on which rights they value the least. I now truly consider it an insult to be tagged as a Republican and to a lesser degree as a Conservative. I’m a Libertarian through and through, as it’s obvious that was the model our Founding Fathers established for this country.
You mean the president that ruled by EOs? The big government Republican using progressive politics and burdened businesses with draconian regulations?
I had a difficult time even deciding between being on the right and being a libertarian. The best way to describe myself is a conservative-libertarian who is a strict constitutionalist. Although I always vote Republican, I have been holding my nose for the last several election cycles.
The president who built a world-class navy, knowing that it was fundamental to the United States’s interest to have such a navy. The president who foresaw conflict with Japan, Germany, and Russia.
He also built the Panama Canal and broke monopolies.
Or would you prefer he never have been president, to live in a world where the language of business and culture is Russian, Japanese, and German, and where government has been supplanted by business unrestrained by unions or Constitutional protections? Where Hawai’i was sovereign Japanese territory and Alaska Russian?
I’m sure that Raven Armament would have made a fine subsidiary of Walther-Ford Waffenfabrik, G.m.b.H (itself a wholly owned subsidiary of Mercedes-Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, the people who brought you the iPhone, build every car you’ve ever seen, every aircraft you’ve ever flown, every electronic device and piece of furniture in your house, and provide free 24/7 surveillance data on all citizens to participating law enforcement organizations: Making your world a safer, more convenient place). Well, you know, if they didn’t decide it was in their best interests to simply ruin you financially or find some obscure patent they owned that you might have somehow violated and have you thrown in prison for it.

This is an interesting discussion. Had no idea we had so many libertarians. Its also interesting see all the well thought out posts describing their views. Thanks guys.
I’m well aware, and it is one of my major misgivings regarding that President. But sadly he is still better than most. And he did make us a super power.
Yep, that one. Reagan was also no saint. Nixon “almost” makes the list.
Yep…that guy. Teddy “the hardly perfect but we were damn lucky to have him” Roosevelt.
I tend to identify mostly with libertarians though I cant for the life of me agree with some of the foreign policies they support.
I believe in the Bill of Rights and what they mean. The Bill of Rights are rights than are inherent in all people regardless of which country they live in. Our foreign policy should reflect that.
I believe in freedom and liberty. If it doesnt harm your neighbor than back off. I am a Christian and there are a great many things that I do not support and do not participate in. I am not your judge, I will speek the truth and will not ACCEPT or SUPPORT these actions, I will however TOLERATE and support your right to make wrong choices(because the freedom to only do what is right in others eyes is not freedom at all).
I do not aggree with gevermental PROMOTION of homosexuality. Live however you want to live but dont expect the government to subsidize you for it(I dont think the government should be subsidizing anything even the things I agree with so dont call me a hipocrit).
I belive in the founding principals of Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happyness. That means all human life. I believe that abortion is in direct violation of those founding pricipals and basically has been pushed upon the unborn since they are not an interest group with money or voting power.
Roosevelt wasn’t a true president, he was a dictator that defended his actions that the ends justified the means.
Libertarians are basically what the Republican party used to be.
I’m a small “l” libertarian, I don’t care for some of the points of the Libertarian party platform.
I’m a right conservative while leaning towards libertarian on some issues.
OK, who’s the 4 lefties?! ![]()
Let’s see if this stays civil or goes all AKpopo in GD-ish…
Constitutionalist libertarian. Socially liberal, fiscally moderate. I do not support our blood being shed unless it’s in defense of American sovereignty or lives. I believe the best gov’t is that which governs least and I also wish that more of our politicians would read Not Yours to Give.
I agree with Jefferson in nearly all things.
This is a civil thread and adults should be able to debate issues like this in a civil manner nor should adults be afraid of disagreement. I appreciate you posting your views however just not the implied insult.
Pat
had a good chat with my brother in law over xmas he is Canadian just for where his view point is ![]()
but a very smart guy about politics in both our countries
talking about of course how lobbying is out of control and with the two parties now being so aligned to the wrong side of the people and to bad your country cant have or get going a 3 party system
also learned a bit about how the Canadian health care system really came into power etc…
I have to say I no longer vote for the one I like but I vote for the lesser of the two evils ! which is a really sad way to vote
