PodCast: "Fat Burning" Zone myth or fact?

My latest project was getting a podcast radio show going finally. First topic covered:

“Fat Burning Zone” myth or legit?

BrinkZone Radio, with host Will Brink, examines the “fat burning zone” with guest Dr. Jose Antonio. People are often told to exercise at lower intensity to “burn” more fat, but is that accurate advice or outdated? This weeks show answers that important question that seems to cause endless confusion.

I plan to cover all manner of topics and have some great guests, so join the RSS feed if interested.

I am by far no expert but I think you are on to something.

After a mt bike wreck that left me unable to run more than a mile or so…I was left with lower impact alternatives like the elliptical.

For 3-4 years, I did 45 minutes to an hour on the elliptical at a steady pace. Sometimes I would ramp up the resistance but never did HIIT on the machine.

In the last 6 months, I gave up on this and went to lifting dumb bells, kettlebells and doing HIIT on the same elliptical machine. I have noticed MUCH more difference in my waist and in tone and definition.

I know this is not really scientific in nature but it is what I have noticed now going on age 47.

The more I push myself and “wear myself out” during a workout…the more I notice results later on. Mixing it up from day to day also helps and keeps it all from getting boring.

Looking forward to adding a TRX trainer to my routine (which is growing) in the next month or so.

Your website is a treasure trove of information…I will keep reading.

PS: this Spartacus workout is going to kill me…or make me really lean! LOL I like it…but I admit it is hard for someone like me.

Glad you enjoyed the show and my site!

Well…I have always been on the “active” side of things with my mt biking and running. However, I used to believe a lot of the old saws about “low intensity fat burn cardio” and things like that. After years of doing those things…I noticed no real gains. Granted, I did not gain fat or weight…but I did not notice new lean muscle or definition.

Your site is very informative. I don’t know if I can stick to all of the things mentioned but I am slowly changing my exercising and adding back in some of the old stand bys like dumb bell workouts and HIIT.

Actually, HIIT on the elliptical CAN really work you…if you push the resistance up and shorten the rest periods. This is good because I need intense workout that is also easy on my knee and heel.

HIIT is good, stuff, but can also have it’s drawbacks as mentioned briefly in this show, so be careful to balance it with other stuff, which sounds like you are. Next show I plan to focus on HIIT, which is essentially the 180 of LISS work this show discusses.

But the treadmill at the gym said I was in the fat burning zone, and I didnt have to work as hard!:nono:

LOL. :stuck_out_tongue:

Listened, good pod. Will it be available for subscription in itunes at some point?

that would be pretty awesome.

Not sure honestly. That’s something I’ll have to look into that. I’m new to this format, so still on the learning curve how how all that works and if the network hosting it (webtalkradio.net) offers the shows via Itunes, or I’ll have to set that up myself, etc.

Thanx for asking though.

Not sure. I’ll look into that one for sure. Thanx for asking. Will update when I know more.

Well…I have always been on the “active” aspect with my mt driving and managing. However, I used to believe a lot of the old saws about “low durability fat get rid of cardio” and aspects like that. After years of doing those methods…I noticed no real advantages. Offered, I did not acquire fat or body weight…but I did not notice new muscle or significance.
