Is this a good pistol to get into 1911’s. I had a very nice Colt I bought new about 25yrs ago and like a fool I traded it for a Taurus 9mm of all things. I still regret that. I just want a good reliable 1911 to get back in the game. Thanks das
As long as you dont over pay for it why not. I have one it shoots great and is a good base for a custom pistol in the future. It is an 80 series so it will have the added safety inside the back right of the slide which makes it a bit more time consuming when detail stripping but other than that its true 1911 no guff.
Mine did chew up my hands a bit from hammer bite but its nothing you cant fix with a file or the addition of a bever tail.
If you can swing a few hundred more, the new Colt Series 70 reproductions are quite nice and don’t have the Series 80 FPS. Either is a good base gun, but I’d prefer to build on the 70 series.
Very nice gun for the money! I bought one BNIB at a gun show in 1994 for $399. Sold it which was a mistake…![]()
I bought this one back in '08. It’s been very reliable with Checkmate G.I. and Wilson 47 mags.
I sent it to Colt’s custom shop for a trigger job, dehorn and frontstrap serrations. I added the arched MSH, Harrison trigger and series 70 rear sight, Novak installed the gold bead front.

Very nice ! I like the front strap serrations and the wear on it adds character. Good choices on the mods. ![]()
Hmm. I really didn’t notice the wear until you mentioned it.
Sorry about that ! It’s a good thing, though. :dance3:
I am very fond of colts. I have never bought a 1911 that is not a colt and my several 70 series and 80 series guns run perfectly.
I can’t understand why so many people are in love with the foreign made springfield when for just a little more (often near the same) cost a great condition used Colt series 80 can be found
