Ya know it’s kinda like building a $1000.00 Ruger 1022. At least it was for me. Pricey but you get what you pay for. They are fun and somewhat cheap to shoot. Would make a great home defense weapon pending on how you build it. You can shoot them on any pistol range and they are just plain cool. Also a lot cheaper than an HK94 SBR’ed. That’s my take on it. YMMV.
Most of the ranges I shoot at prohibit these weapons. Your experience may differ.
I don’t know how practical they are. The only folks I’ve seen with them couldn’t hit the target consistently. I’d rather have a shotgun or full-sized weapon for home defense, but I am sure others will disagree with me.

A 5.56 is a much better home defense round than any of the pistol calibers. As for the op, get one because you want it, they are fun.

There are two advantages to a pistol caliber carbine like a Colt 6450 that I can think of off the top of my head.

Low muzzle blast/flash, which makes it easier for many newer female or junior shooters to deal with.

If you live in an area that your access to anything other than an indoor range is not convenient, you can at least get some range time indoors.
Also, 9mm tends to be more affordable than 5.56mm.
Wow I would think in Texas the pistol ranges would be fine with them.
Here is Southern Nevada they are.
I like shooting steel plates with mine. Run and gun stuff. It is very accurate and efficient at that.
At the pistol range I usually shoot it at 25 yards were I can keep all my shoots in a 6" cluster and I am no marksman. It’s set up not to have much recoil and stays on target with double taps and triple taps…
I agree a shot gun would make a great home defence weapon but I wanna keep my hearing so I have a 20 round mag full of Federal 147 gr 9mm HST’s I keep near mine in case the SHTF. I also keep a 11.5 AR-15 ready with 69 gr HPBT Cor bon rounds in it with a mag of SS109’s next to that. I will be adding a suppressor to that as well. I can’t see many bad guys storming my little house with body armor on but you never no… With my 9mm I can put 5 rounds on a pie plate at 15 yards moving all day long and still be able to hear when all is said and done… YMMV…
Are there any reliable .40 AR?
I’d like to get a pistol caliber AR, since .223/5.56 are not allowed for us civvies in Brazil and 9mm is just a huge a PITA.
So, my best guess would be .40 or .45, but the latter is expensive as hell here.
Not that I’ll be putting thousand of rounds per year, because of the stupid antigun regulations here. I mean stupid. You americans complain, but you have no idea… If I could relocate to the US, I could even like in California, their gun laws are totally permisive by brazilian standards.
So… I’d like an AR, if that is ever possible, it would have to be in .40.
Not that I can use that for home defense though.
For HD, I’d have to resort to a 16" .38 (or .44-40) lever action or a 12ga pump.
This is pretty much exactly the kind of rig I’m thinking of getting. What are the details on the build?

Lot’s of reasons to get one (I have two). The main reason (for me) is cost to shoot it AND many shoot houses do not allow 5.56 in them. So if I wan the feel of an AR, but can’t shoot 5.56, this is a great option.

I guess I can only have a 16" barrel.
If anything, glock magazines would be OK, since probably the accompanying pistol would be glock too.

Also, for you to anything bigger than .380 (even rifles) you have to be registered with the People’s Army and be subject to their exacting (mostly confusing) standards and rigorous (mostly annoying) periodic inspections.
Also, despite the laws being the same for 9mm and .40, the bureaucracy mades it nearly impossible to have/transport/buy anything in 9mm, requiring additional forms and approval from up the CoC that isn´t required for .40.
Mind you, I´m a civvie, with no criminal whatsoever. If I were a criminal, I could have an 5.56 AR and/or a 9mm pistol , whatever.
So, my only hopes of even getting something AR lies with a .40 or risk buying the .22 that is available here.
If I could have 9mm, a Colt it would be.
My only other option of having an AR would be to immigrate to the US. Can you offer me a job?

I have a S&W 15-22, which if nothing else is a damn fun gun to shoot, and dress up like the big boy ARs. I also shot a steel plate shoot with it, with good success.
I will have as of tomorrow a Colt 6450, mainly for these reasons:
- Nice addition to my black rifle collection
- Will be fun to SBR
- Hopefully my girl will shoot it
- Can use it at the steel plate as well
- Ammo variety in a carbine for SHTF…
- Can shoot it at the indoor ranges here
I’m sure there are more. I do realize that there not a ton of practical uses for a 9mm that a 5.56 can’t do, but as a non-primary weapon, I will get good use out of it.
What about a .22LR. I think that will be my next rifle build.

9mm terminal ballisitcs pale in comparison to 5.56 ballistics
Decent soft armor will generally defeat 9 (if that is pertinent to your employment), which can be a pro or con.
9mm will generally penetrate more interior walls than 5.56
9mm ARs can be finicky princesses
Don’t expect them to compete with a 5.56 gun past 100 meters.
Troublesome zeroes (application depending, see above)
I wouldn’t lose any of my 5.56 guns to get a 9mm AR, but I would not mind having one for the wife/gf/whatever and general shootin fun.
I’m working on a 9mm upper build, which mag system is preferred for the 9mm uppers? I’ve read all sorts of things but it seems to come down to the Colt mags are the well regarded mag. Thoughts?
I have EXTREMELY LIMITED time with 9mm uppers.
I do not own any, nor do I have any friends that own any.
The ones I was exposed to were owned by a foreign military unit that I shot for giggles.
I am completely unqualified to give technical advice on them.
FWIW- they were Colts, modifications unknown, pretty sure they were all Colt mags, no stoppages in the 2 or 3 hundred rounds I pushed, unknown suppressor and mount.
The Colt pattern is the standard. Colt magazines were made by a company called Metalform, and again, are the gold standard for 9mm magazines. CProducts are hit and miss, if you get some that work, never sell them. If they don’t, keep trading them out with the company till you get some good ones. That may be impossable as the company is out of buisness now. Modified Uzi mags work great to, but you will lose the BHO feature as the followers are not made for it. As they can be had cheaply, once modified they will work great (M60Joe on the Uzitalk.com site is a good person to have modify them). You can make the cut yourself with a dremel, not hard and several YouTube vids to walk you thru it. ProMag plastic magazines are for target practice. Poorly made and shitty materials make for one to avoid like the plague. Lone Wolf Distributers is marketing a lower which will take Glock magazines. This is a great thing but again, you’ll lose the BHO if that’s important to you. The bolt must also be machined to clear the magazines geometry.
