I see more and more of these out there. Anybody have experience shooting one of these? What will they do that a M4 won’t do?

I have a SBR, 2 AR pistols and one AK pistol with the SBA3 brace. I won’t be seeking the permission of the crown to put a plastic shoulder implement on my legally acquired guns ever again.

Some states you can’t have a loaded rifle in vehicle, but you can have a loaded pistol.
Yup, what they said. They are not quite as comfy as a real stock, though the SBA3 comes the closest. It does a pretty good job. I still prefer a real stock, and I love my SBR the most, but that damn government overreach is just a bitch to have to deal with. Having a “pistol” is just so much easier. I’ll probably not do any more SBRs ever again unless they do away from the tax and registry laws.
- SBRs are $200 more expensive.
- You have to do a butt load of paperwork, wait months on end to see if you get approved, have your name on some government hit list, and ask permission to travel out of state with them. (and not all states even allow them)
- Nobody else can borrow them, unless you did a trust, and they’re on it.
- Can’t sell them.
- Pistol laws apply to the braced guns, so carrying, and concealing it changes things legally. Especially in a vehicle.
SBR laws are baloney and shouldn’t even exist. They do nothing. But in lieu of blatantly rocking unregistered SBRs we have braced AR pistols which do away with all the cons of NFA with almost all of the pros; so while you can’t specifically have a SOPMOD stock or whatever for a clone build you can get great adjustable braces like the SBA3 these days so there’s something that should work for everybody to ride the hassle-free NFA-defying bandwagon. My AR pistol is the only AR I shoot anymore:
To echo what others have already said, I like the idea of keeping a mag in the gun while traveling, and not giving the government anymore of my money.
SB Tactical’s new SBA4 came out a few weeks ago. I ended up purchasing one and I must say, I think this thing has closed the gap between “brace” and stock. It feels better in the shoulder than many of my rifles with real stocks do, and the cheek weld is very nice (between a B5 Bravo and SOPMOD). The rubber wings really don’t flex much at all, and it doesn’t have the issue that the SBA3 did with the wings folding over themselves. It also seems to lock up as tight as most of my other BCM/B5/LMT stocks do on my rifles. The only thing I haven’t had a chance to try yet is mortaring the rifle to clear a malfunction. I suspect that as long as you used the top rear portion of the brace just behind the receiver extension and not contact the rubber wings, you’d probably be ok.
I have an SBA3, and while the bottom wings can fold on themselves a little, its not something I would spend money trying to fix. I love my SBA3 and after using it for a few range trips, am convinced I dont need to SBR anything. It really is 95% of what I would want in a carbine stock. My go-to carbine stock on the market is the BCM in case you needed refernce.
I just built up a pistol but still plan to SBR another lower soon.
I have the SBA3 stock and like it. The only thing I don’t like is the length of pull. I’m 6’ and run my stock all the way out. The SBA3 is the equivalent of running a stock one click in. Is anyone running a A5 extension with one?
Gotta say some of the new braces are crazy similar to stocks and the cost has come down on a bunch of them. Biggest downside would be the lack of a front grip on shorter guns if you prefer having one. Something like a mp5k in my mind should be sbr’d so you can use the hk front grip on it.
I’ve SBR’d everything short personally, I like my extra choices in stocks. The ATF already has a bunch of info on me due to the suppressor and machine gun tax stamps, a few sbr’s are not going to change anything.

SBR laws, and their associated hoops, paperwork, 200 dollar extra expense, wait time, all crap. Wish those laws weren’t like that.
I can have the “pistol” loaded in the car.
I can cross state lines with it.
My KAK shockwave works very well on my 11.5 incher. I want for nothing, except quick adjustability, which I can get with a different brace. No need for that at this time.
Gun runs great. What little I would gain with an honest to goodness stock is nowhere near worth all the other SBR BS.

SBM4 makes my Mk 18 EOD-inspired build CCW legal, plus I can use the “tunnel” as a carrier for a spare mag. 
TBH, pretty much any rear-end furniture is more use as ballast than a point of contact with my odd misshapen shoulder anyway… “Improvise, Adapt, Overcome.”
I had to pogo my pistol to remove a stuck case during a family outing last Thanksgiving holiday and simply collapsed the SBA3. When I did so, it knocked the end cap loose and I lost it. Fortunately, I rarely have to pogo any of my ARs, but I’d have to pogo my pistol again, I’m removing the arm brace first.
My AR pistol is one of the ARs I shoot the most and the money spent on the Split Fix to bolster the SBA3 was well worth it.
I have a few NFA SBR’s and I’m not really in the market for more. That said adjustable braces are interesting, especially the newer ones. Less ass pain for less money is never a bad thing.
Do people have pistols built with braces in their self defense rotation?
…and I guess the unanswerable question is how do we know they won’t go the way of bump stocks.
I’m running an SBA3 with a 7 position A5 on my 9" .300 ACC BO and I’m pretty happy with it. I can’t speak to length of pull because I’m a short guy and like the short configuration, but you do lose a couple of positions since the SBA3 is only a 5 position brace. I’m out of town at the moment, but I could measure it fully extended for you if you like, just send me a pm and I can do it on Tuesday.
IMHO this is the reason to have at least 1 SBR lower in the safe, if not a few.

If braces are banned, I would expect it to be via ATF changing their previous determinations. I would just have a non-AR friend or relative hold on to my upper until my SBR registration is completed.
I have been an AR pistol owner for 2 days, but I do understand the appeal of both the brace and the SBR route.
