Pinned Stock Question

Hello Everyone,

Thanks for all the help I’ve received so far. I have the unfortunate luck of being a NJ resident and I am unable to move out for a few more years. I have a Ruger SR556 NJ state compliant model with the fixed position “collapsible stock.” Would anyone know if this stock is an actual collapsible stock that has just been pinned, or if it is only a collapsible stock look-a-like? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Also, I live in Bergen County. Is it possible to purchase a collapsible stock online and bring it to a gunsmith to pin it to a position that better fits me and then replace my stock? In it’s current state, my rifle stock is pinned all the way in the most extended position possible, which is far too long for me to wield properly. What gunsmiths in Bergen County would you recommend for any of these processes and at what cost?

Or would it be possible for me to purchase a shorter length fixed position stock such as a skeleton stock and replace it on my own? What tools would I need should I need any?

Respectfully,

I don’t know if your stock is pinned or a mock collapsible stock. But either way you can change it. If it is pinned you should be able to drill a hole and knock the pin out and then re-pin to your desired position. You have to find out where and how the stock is pinned. Or you could just buy a new reciever extension & stock then pin it yourself. It’s not hard to do, you will probably need a hammer, drill, and punches to re-pin, throw in a castle nut wrench if you are changing the reciever extension.

  1. buy a magpul fixed carbine stock
  2. take it took a gun smith. Try G&S hunters in Paterson.

See bold above.

Fellow NJ’er, and Bergen County’er (Teaneck) here. I don’t know specifically on your rifle, but on a S&W M&P15T(F) I had purchased a while back, the faux collapsible, was not a true collapsible that was pinned. I’ve seen a Bushmaster or 2 w/ the faux stock, and it wasn’t a true pinned collapsible receiver extension either. They both used some kind of odd ball hybrid receiver extension.

I just yesterday received 2 of the new Magpul Carbine Fixed Stocks. They use an innovative mounting setup that doesn’t require the stock being pinned. One is mounted it to an VLTOR A5 receiver extension. The other is mounted to a standard carbine receiver extension. This would be equivalent to having a carbine stock set to the 2nd, or so, notch from fully closed. I believe the LOP is just over 12" from trigger face to the rear of the stock. I have 34" arms and find this to be a great length for me. I find the A2 way too long. A1 length isn’t bad though. I also have a VLTOR Modstock Rifle A1 length fixed stock on another rifle and like it as well. Just removed an ACE A1 length stock for the Magpul Carbine Fixed Stock. The ACE in A1 length is not bad. It’s light and very sturdy, but don’t like the sling mount options available for it. Also have an ACE Entry that I removed for the Magpul Fixed Carbine Stock. I find the ACE Entry too short, and again sling mounting options are not the best for me.

Let me know if you’re interested in one of the ACE stocks I have.

With whatever you get, if you need help, let me know. I have the tools. Aside from pinning a gas block or front sight base, I do all my own work, as it’s very easy on an AR platform.

The only thing salvageable will be the buffer. You will need a new receiver extension and stock.

For my purchased rifles I got a new Mil-spec RE and stock. picked out the length of pull I felt comfortable with, drill, pin, epoxy, shoot/enjoy.

Never tried the new fixed MOE stock, but it looks to be too long for me. I have all my stocks pinned 1 click from full collapse and that is only so that I can access the sling attachments at the receiver end plate. If not for that, they would be pinned fully collapsed.

Thanks for the advice. I actually already ordered the ACE entry stock being that I’m about 5’8" I think it comes with the buffer tube, and the Ruger uses a carbine buffer and spring so I should be set with that. I ordered my own stock and barrel AR15 wrench, the TAPCO version off of Midwayusa.

In the future, I do plan on purchasing another AR 15, if I think the ACE stock I ordered fits me well after I install it, how much would you be willing to sell yours for?
