Pinned stock question??

I have a Colt Match Target MT6400 Carbine (post-ban compliant version of the Colt LE6920). It has a factory pinned M4 stock. Can I change just the stock itself or do I also have to change the buffer tube being that it is pinned?

Thanks, NYH1.

What are you trying to do? Convert it to a no-ban? Put on a rifle stock? Swap to a different pinned stock?

I’m thinking about putting a Magpul Stock on it.

Thanks, NYH1.

Either a ASC or ASC-L if that matters.

NYH1.

hey NYH1,
you just have to un pin your m4 stock and just change the stock out, but be sure to get the milspec model to fit your buffer tube

SMT85, thanks.

I’m going to assume it was properly done: a blind pin, which will make it difficult to remove the pin. You can drill the pin out (destroying the pin), remove the buttstock, replace it with whatever you want, drill a hole in the new buttstock, then insert a new pin.

But, I would earnestly suggest you give consideration to the length of pull on the stock. Since you can put the stock anywhere on the receiver extension/buffer tube, you may want to change the length of pull to something shorter than the usual 13.5"/A2 length. Perhaps consider an A1 length of 13" instead? If you do this, you will have to drill the buttstock and the receiver extension for the new pin location.

Alternatively, you can remove the entire receiver extension and replace it with a new receiver extension with the new buttstock drilled and pinned. You can reuse the castle nut and end plate, but I would buy new ones. This has the advantage of preserving the original Colt setup, in case you want to return it to near original configuration. Just remember that properly installed receiver extensions will have the end plate staked into the castle nut.

Amicus, yes it’s the factory type blind pinned stock.

I’m probably going to buy everything new as you mentioned. I’m going to use a end plate with a detachable sling mount. One of the things I like about the ACS and ACS-L Stock’s is they have up to a 15" LOP. I like longer LOP stocks, they work better for me. This way I can try it and pin it exactly where I like it. I’ll stake everything correctly.

Thanks for the info, NYH1.

The Colt MT6400/6400R’s don’t use a standard receiver extension. The extension they use is rifle length but milled out to use a carbine buffer and spring.
You’ll have to swap out the RE if you’re going to change he stock.

I just did this with all 3 of my Colts. I used the RE kits from BCM, and the Colt/Rogers stock.

Is there something special about the stocks? I would assume that if the stock is a standard size (mil-spec or commercial), and fits on a mil-spec or commercial extension, then it would be possible to change for another stock of that size. Can you explain?

I have no experience with post-ban Colts and would like to know.

Nothing special about the stock itself other than its missing the latch to extend it. The MT6400’s use a M5(I think) bolt that screws into the bottom of the receiver extension. That, and the roll pins drilled into the side of the RE are what fixes the stock in place.

The buffer tube is ‘special’. It does not have the detents milled into it to adjust the stock positions, and it is longer than a standard carbine buffer tube. In fact, it’s rifle length.

I used to have pics of the factory setup but I deleted them the other day.

DT, thanks for the info. As long as I replace the new RE and everything in it with the carbine setup, I should be good to go, correct?

Thanks, NYH1.

Yup, it’s an easy process. There are many good videos on Youtube. I’ve done the MOE, a couple of ACS, and a Vltor E-Mod for family and friends. Damn shame destroying the functionality of those stocks. I don’t use glue or “blind” pin. I just drill through and drive a roll pin. The way I read the law that’s good. I like the stocks with battery tubes better because the hide the “work”.

That is correct.

I should clarify, you can reuse your buffer spring and buffer. Just need to change the RE, castle nut, and end plate.

Let me know if you need any assistance. Glad to help in any way I can.

Yup.

DT: Thanks for describing the Colt REs. I spend a lot of time in ban states, and have variations on that theme from S&W, Bushmaster, etc., but have no experience with them. Most people from ban states who ask my advice want a shorter system, and I point them to A1 length rifle setups or Sully stocks. If you use some of the available sling adapters (Troy, KAC, DPMS [yeesh] you can get a variety of LoP options without pinning.

NYH1: You might consider a rifle length system with an A2 length stock and an extended recoil pad and/or sling adapter to get the LoP you described. That would require a new buffer, spring, stock, RE extender (usually come with the Troy sling adapter). I won’t go into the whole carbine/rifle system discussion, but the rifle system is generally considered superior.

Amicus, I have the A2 stock on my Stag Model 1 Carbine. I like the A2 stock, I just really prefer the feel of my Colt with the M4 stock over it. I’ve been reluctant to take the factory M4 stock setup off because it is so tight and nice fitting. If I can get Magpul ASC or ASC-L stock setup nice and tight like my Colt is, it’d be sweet.

I don’t want two carbines with A2 stocks on them. Some day my Stag may be made into a AR15A4 20" rifle (M16A4 clone.)

Thanks again guys, I really appreciate it! NYH1!

You should consider the Colt/Rogers stock. It has a VERY solid lockup as compared to the standard M4 stock.

I took the A2 stock off my Stag tonight and put my new Magpul ASC Stock (and RE) on it just to see how I liked it. . . . . .AWESOME!

I have to get a new castle nut and end plate with either a loop or quick detachable sling mount, not sure which I’m going to go with. I need to get a good wrench to change the castle nut. Then I’ll put it on my Colt. Stacking it won’t be a problem.

Thanks, NYH1.
