Picked up my new M1A Socom II

I ordered a M1A Socom II from Springfield Armory Inc when I was at the factory in December. It was ready in January but I just now had time to pick it up, I can not wait to shoot it! I had them install the extended rail on the rifle which is not usually available on the Urban Camo stock. I can now mount any optic I want on the rifle. I also picked up another XDm 9mm this time in OD/Black. Always a fun day when picking up guns at the factory!

That is a sweet rifle! You are going to love it.

I would highly recommend getting a NM OPROD spring guide like the ones made by Badger Ordnance or Sadlak. I have the Sadlak ones in my M1As and they make an immediate difference.

Nice pickup with the XD. Sounds like it was a worthwhile trip.

Love it. That is the gun I dream of. I would love the loaded SOCOM that they picture on the site when you hover over it. That thing has every option in that picture that I could ever want for…until add on man-killing lazer beams come out, or bayonet light-sabers become the norm.

Very nice dude, your a lucky man to have such a fine piece of equipment!

Load up 5 mags, and empty them as fast as you can pull the trigger. Let us know how it shoots.

damn nice rifle… Man I love those urban camo stocks… when I bought my scout, the dealer also had an urban socom II. I almost bought it, but then again he wanted like 300 bucks more for it too…

Let us know how it shoots…

Oh man, that rifle’s just begging for an aimpoint (imho). Very nice.

Yes, please post results from the first time out. Would love to hear a report on how it shoots.

I will be taking it to the range today, I will let you all know how it shoots.

As for optics I am either going to put the Nightforce 1-4 or a Leupold Mark4 1.5-5 w/ illumination. I have also kicked around a new Trijicon TR24 but after looking at them the illumination is just ok since its just the center dot but I have not ruled them out yet.

Sexy. Only thing I wouldve done different is the rail. That is too much rail and too much weight for my taste…I’d settle for a scope mount and a place to mount my bipod

Congrats on the purchase, though! Look forward to seeing it in action…

I’m not sure if it would even work on a Socom, but has anyone here got any experience with the M1A Ultimak rail on any M1A/M14 variant?
I have always thought it might be a good alternative for a rail, as I seriously cannot stand the look and design of those funky USGI scope rails. Even the latest generation Springfield version of the USGI rail looks like a real loser to me.
What’s the story with the Ultimak on an M1A guys?

Here is my range report I posted on the M14 forum:

So I bought a new M1A Socom II this week from Springfield Inc and had a chance to do some shooting with it today at the range. It was a wonderful late winter day, sunny and 59 here in northern IL. I spent most of the day shooting trap but took the M1A over to the rifle range.

I really was not sure what to expect since I have never owned or shot a M1A/M14 before. My experience with rifles is mostly AR15’s. The M1A was not even close to what I or some friends expected. After putting the first 5 rounds through the gun I had one major problem. I could not stop smiling from ear to ear lol. The M1A is awesome! It is much different from shooting an AR and I have to say I was shocked at how little recoil the rifle has, how accurate it is with Winchester NATO 147 grain ammo. The sound of the rifle was awesome, hell if you don’t hit the bad guy your going to scare the crap out of him lol. I can’t wait to shoot it at night to see the muzzle flash. I was amazed at how much more dirt flew from the backstop when compared to shooting a 5.56. I can tell why the Marines use this rifle, just simply awesome!

The only problem I have now is I want another one! Might have to sell one of my AR’s to buy another M1A, I am thinking a scout model with a Sage EBR stock would be pretty sweet!

Dave

The SOCOM II is pretty damn front heavy from the box. That SF M900 has to make it even worse.

I’d highly recomment just going with a G3 and the vertical grip of your choice.

What’s the story with the Ultimak on an M1A guys?

I installed an Ultimak on an M1A Scout and it seems to be a desirable solution. With medium Leupold QRW Tactical rings, a Burris 2-7x32 handgun scope will mount very low which allows a natural cheek weld w/o any bag or riser. I bought the model with the Posi-Lock feature which allegedly helps retain zero and it was made in Colorado. Some report that Warne rings will get the scope slightly lower however that might make it sit a little too low. In the pictured configuration, the peep slight blocks out the lower 6 o’clock edge in the field of view. The main drawback to this mount is that you are limited to scopes with intermediate eye relief. For me, it is worth it because I valued keeping the rifle as sleek and handy as possible.

Very sweet. I have an older one and wouldn’t trade it for anything…'cept maybe a new one

Um… this isn’t always a good thing. :frowning:

That is pretty cool.

I have an ultimak on my SOCOM 16 and it is fantastic. It is very well made, clamps on tight and sit low enough for me to lower 1/3rd co-witness with my aimpoint. The only way to mount a forward optic on a M1A/M14 IMHO.

Sweet rifle congrats! I went a little outside the box with my SOCOM-16 with aTroy MCS and love it:

M1A’s are fun, too bad their so expensive to feed these days…Heres my Socom2 and a full length loaded…
