Weird to think my dad was the same age as the young guys in some of these pics, sitting on a PT boat in Manila, staging for an invasion of Japan which never happened because (at least in part) of the bombs getting loaded up in these pictures.
Here is my Grandfather on Tinian as part of the 509th Composite Group. He didnt ride with Fat Man or Little Boy but was supposedly invovled in some sort of related mission supporting the those guys. He died before I was born so I couldnt ever ask him. Spent his whole career in the service. I’m working on getting his service records.

Thanks for posting these. I always had the impression that “the bomb” was much bigger than it looks in the photos. Interesting to see a person standing beside it to give some scale.
My grandfather went into WWII as a carpenter. After basic training and AT in Armored, Ft Knox and Ft Gordon, he was sent to Oak Ridge, Tn to supervise a crew doing construction of buildings on the what is now the National Laboratory. Later went on to work for the TVA.
