What are the legal way to permanently attach a flash hider? I need to do it and was wondering if I could do it or am I going to have to “outsource” it. Thanks
Silver solder, pinned (pressed on, no threading) or welded over set screw (dimpled at threads).
For the do-it-yourself’r silver soldering is probably the easiest.
Or my personal favorite: blind pin and weld. Similar to the set screw method above, but it uses pin instead.
- Thread muzzle device onto the muzzle.
- Drill a small hole through the device into the threads (careful not to drill into the bore).
- Insert a pin and weld over the hole.
When done properly, you’ll never know where the pin hole is located.

I’ve always wondered how the Gubment would be able to tell that it’s permed if it’s not visible.
Not that it’s ever really checked, but I suppose it could be.
I find that silver soldered muzzle devices are often removable with “common hand tools” which makes it not nearly an acceptable method, even though it IS mentioned as an acceptable method in the letters written by BATFE.
I strongly encourage the “pin and weld” method instead.

Randall,
I tried E-mailing but then later read that you are unable to answer E-mails because of the volume you receive. I fully understand getting lost in the volumes of e-mail…
Is there any issue doing the blind pin and weld on a stainless flash hider?
Can you install a .625 FSB base on a Colt barrel utilizing/matching the existing taper pin holes?
Thanks.
I don’t weld stanless in my shop, but I take them to a local welder so it’s no problem.
I don’t do FSB installations on previously drilled/pinned barrels.
Thanks fro all of the great info. I think I will go with this

It looks like it will save me allot of work.
I stock those, but I don’t actually USE them.
You can plainly see that there are two pins there.
There are also two holes.
No matter which way you install it, at least one of those holes is going to be in the upper half.
That means you will have visible weld in the upper half as well.
While it’s certainly a convenience to not have to drill the hole in the Vortex, I find that the cosmetic side-effects of the visible weld on top are worse than the drilling of a single hole on the bottom.
