My department only allows colt and RRA for their duty rifles. The approved ammo is a 50gr varmint round…with my knowledge gained here, would it be better to use the RRA 1:9 rifle apposed to the favored colt 1:7?
I just want to check my instinct before I commit to buying a rifle. Thanks

Is this an actual varmint gopher round or merely a light OTM?
Anyways, while a slower twist would seem more intuitive, if I could only have one, it would be Colt.
Colt made/makes some 1:9 carbine barrels and flattop uppers. There is also the 6721 but it is an HBAR carbine.
Are you limited by exact model or merely manufacturer?
To my knowledge, manufacturer. It says approved makes colt and rra. Barrel must be 16in 1:7 or 1:9.

If it were me, and if I were truly limited to 50 grs…
I’d look seriously at a 6721. The HBAR seems off-putting but unless you just totally accessorize your rifle it should not be too cumbersome. I’m assuming this is for normal patrol and not anything tactical. Realistically, aside from quals and personal practice or further training; the rifle will likely spend most of its time in a rack or a case.
A 1/7 wouldn’t be a deal breaker but if you wanted the absolute most out of a 50 gr round the 1/9 would make more sense.
There are some excellent 53gr and 55 gr rounds…50 seems limiting. The long and short is that I would not personally consider a Rock River, ever.
Within 70 yards it won’t matter anyway. Colt anything.
Get the Colt, then start working on your management to switch to a better duty round.
Molon’s testing with light bulllets and 1/7 twist barrels seems to prove that it’s a working combination.
With that in mind, I’d say go with the Colt. Better made, and a better option if the department ever decides to change ammo.
The ammo is 55 grain. It’s basically a reboxed varmint round. Get the Colt.

In all likelihood the carbines and ammunition you are authorized were tested by someone within your agency or another agency that provided the information to your department. Ask what accuracy was required and about durability testing.
If you could provide specific information about the ammunition it would be helpful. Did you get the information from a vendor or the agency Vendetta?

Our agency issues Winchester, Federal and Remington 55g softpoint ammunition. We have Armalite, Bushmaster, Colt and Rock River Arms carbines in our inventory. Rank and file personnel shoot an average of 1,000 rounds in the carbine course and average 150 rounds per year in training. SWAT average 500-1,000 rounds per month.
If you can get specific information about your testing protocol, what we experienced may be helpful to you.
I said the exact round in my previous post. The ammo was tested by the range staff and units like SWAT. They shoot multiple rounds through multiple rifles and barriers, and record the data, then pick a round. The department has various rifles depending on SWAT’s 10.5’s, narc’s 14.5’s, and the 16" patrol rifles.
As far as training. He will shoot around 1,000 rounds when he can get into the school. Past that we aren’t given any training rounds, minus 20 or so during each qual. So patrol guys will shoot maybe 200 or so through the year, unless they do a lot of training on their own. The department hasn’t done an advanced rifle or anything in a while. SWAT and narcotics are the only two that are really given training ammo.
What are your accuracy and durability requirements?
I don’t remember that, and I believe I have it somewhere. I don’t see them changing the round anytime soon. It’s been the issued round for a while now, along with the Winchester Ranger pistol rounds. Even after all the issues they’ve had with .357 Sig rounds, they still have kept the Ranger. There wa talk maybe a year or so ago of Gold Dots, but that never came around. The department is pretty strict on things, especially with the past year.
Things as simple as grip tape and a Glock magwell that were authorized for me under narcotics, aren’t authorized for others. It use to be a little more lax, but given some issues a year ago, they’ve reverted back to being very strict about the weapons policy.
We don’t have any experience with your .223 round. We have had a few incidents in which the Winchester and Federal 55g SP rounds worked well. Accuracy with the Winchester 55g was not that great beyond 100 yards.
Yeah pretty curious what 50gr bullet this is.
FWIW I use 64 gr SP.
We don’t use a 50 grain round, I believe he was mistaken. It’s a 55 grain Winchester Ranger round.

My original duty rifle was a Bushmaster and the thing was superbly accurate. My newer Colt is not as accurate but has proven to be way more durable. My Bushmaster went down with broken parts on at least 4 occasions. Possibly 5 but Im having a hard time remembering this late.
By the way if you work for Dallas we are still kinda upset that you guys sent us Garcia… An apology would be nice.
