Two parents are behind bars in Michigan after authorities said their 7-year-old son died weighing more than 250 pounds in a startling case of alleged neglect.

Damien O’Brien, 40, and Jessica O’Brien, 41, face charges including second-degree murder in the death of their child, Casper Jacob Shane O’Brien, according to regional ABC affiliate WJRT and Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton. The defendants are being held at the Genesee County Jail on no bond.

The cause of death was determined to be dilated cardiomyopathy, which is described by the Mayo Clinic as “a type of heart muscle disease that causes the heart chambers (ventricles) to thin and stretch, growing larger” and can be caused by obesity.

At the time of his death, Casper was reportedly just over 4 feet tall and weighed 255 pounds, far beyond the 50- to 73-pound range the CDC says is healthy for someone of his age, height, and sex.

A New Mexico mom who let her teenage sons throw a graduation party that ended with a fatal shooting at her home will avoid jail time.

Crystal Aguilar, 41, pleaded no contest to selling or giving alcohol to minors and was sentenced on June 22 to 18 months of probation, according to online court records. The charge came in connection with a party that she allowed her teenage sons to throw at the family home in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on May 31, 2025.

Police said in a criminal complaint that witnesses said Aguilar put out a variety of alcoholic beverages that were consumed by several teenage guests, including the 19-year-old boy, who brought a gun with him.

According to the complaint, which was obtained by the Albuquerque Journal, the teenagers were not the only ones partaking in the alcoholic beverages.

Officers responded to Aguilar’s home after receiving calls about a gunshot. Police said the 19-year-old had turned the gun on himself, and he died on the lawn in Aguilar’s backyard. When officers spoke to Aguilar and her husband, both of them were believed to be intoxicated.

Aguilar told police that she had just stepped outside to “hype” up the young guests when she heard the gunshot, then saw the 19-year-old fall to the ground. A woman who came to the party with the teen said that he “appeared fine” earlier that day, and had told him not to bring a gun to the party “because the mother at the party said no guns were allowed.” Police said that a gun found underneath the teen’s body was reported stolen.

You can’t be your Kids Best Friend

Seems to me a legit local story morphed into useless National Inquiry-like noise by the usual suspects.

Fat piles of human lard parents raise a fat pile of lard kid. Kid dies from being a fat pile of lard. Fat parents charged with crime. Certainly tragic for the kid but national news reporting for days on end? CNN, NYT, USAToday, ABC… all the usual suspects repeatedly chirping day after day. ABC News Los Angeles reporting fat parenting tragedy in Michigan?

At what point don’t you look over and see that you are killing your Kid?

It doesn’t matter if you bought a 7 year old 3 BigMac’s? It’s okay to go do shots with your Kid in the backyard while your neighborhood gangster shoots himself in the head?

No Man, People need to step up and Common Sense Parent for a Generation or two because the Folks we are raising now aren’t cutting it.

It all boils down to mental illness and/or degeneracy. Just like when I see adults with 87,000 stickers on their car or a guy with piercings all over his face or a lady with purple hair and a bullring in her nose. It all boils down to either or both of those things.

I

I’m not sure it was better in the past. Lots of shit went on in behind closed doors in rural areas. There was no such thing as child protective services. In cities where kids exceeded child labor needs, kids were abandoned by the zillions which created the orphanage industry. In the early 20th century kids were loaded on trains by the hundreds of thousands in the East to ship to the Midwest to be used as farm labor and sex toys. None of this mitigates today’s horror stories of child abuse but things used to be pretty bad in the past.
