Went to swap a different recoil pad on to my 700 SPS stainless, found something odd. Inside the factory stock (Gun is 300WM, looking for a .308 gun to build, tough to justify putting money into this…) was a piece of packing foam… Is this the factory solution to try to keep noise from passing into the stock? Just curious.
Filling that cavity with resin or some other hardening liquid base does wonders for balance and shock dampening. Filling it with caulk works pretty well.
If I’m going to be stuck with my SPS-V stock for a little bit while saving up for a McMillan/Manners, would a solid filler help with the rigidity as well?
Probably. Anything helps. The main area of contention is the action contact though. It twists, bends, and contorts with the phases of the moon. This puts uneven pressure on the action, which makes the barrel point in a different direction, changing your POI. You can do things to help this… but it’s tough to make work.
I seem to remember somebody bedding his plastic stock and it helping out. The bedding eventually broke loose from the plastic, but it didn’t much matter.
That stuff does work great. I’ve used it in one of my stocks and it reduced the hollow sound quite a bit, and it wasn’t too heavy. It’d be a pain to get out though!
