P30?

Just took the plunge today and bought a NIB HK P30. On the way home I stopped by a local gun shop and picked up a few extra mags.

Now for the tough part, the holster. I know that to a certain extent it is a matter of user preference but I would like to know what you guys are using. I am looking for one for range use and one for CC. I would like to be able to carry it with my Surefire light but that is not a deal breaker.

Thanks!

Why a different holster for range use vs. carry? I’m making the (possibly mistaken) assumption that you are a civilian, and will not need a duty holster. If this is the case, why train using one piece of equipment, then use a different piece of equipment “for real?” If you are LEO or military and have to carry in a duty rig while working, but a different holster for CC off-duty, then there is more justification for two holsters. Not asking the question in a baiting manner - I think it’s worth some reflection on what you hope to achieve through your training at the range.

No I am not an LEO. You make a very good point that I have never thought of. For some reason I have always just had some sort of belt rig for when I go to the range and then an inside waistband rig if I CC the gun.

I agree with Yrac, why get two different holsters for range and CC? Train like you play is a good mentality to have, I would train with what you will be using on a day to day basis. I personally carry Comp-tac and Raven Concealment Holsters. I’ve been carrying my 1911 in a Raven holster day to day when I go to work. It’s the exact holster I use to go to the range as well. You don’t want to spend hours at the range getting practice with a holster (or weapon for that matter) that won’t be the same setup you will be carrying concealed and possibly using to save your life or others. That’s just my opinion, you’ll resort to muscle memory and what you know. IE having a holster that doesn’t have retention at the range then carrying a holster that has a hood and various other retention devices while CC’n. This is just my .02 and my experience. As far as holsters…Comp-tac and Raven get my vote. Raven holsters allow for lights as well. Good luck and I hope this helps.

You guys are right and it makes perfect sense. I would like a Raven but they don’t make one for the P30 with or without a light. The Comp-tac is nice and I have one for my P2000SK.

I have an RCS for my P30. Maybe they don’t make a P30L, but they do make a P30.

Here’s the holster that allows the light, just go through the drop boxes and configure your holster  Enjoy!

Just to be clear, with the RCS phantom light “compatible” holster you have to have the light mounted for the holster to retain the pistol. So if you want to use a light only some of the time you must get two holsters.

I can’t speak directly to Raven’s policy, but with many of the “boutique” holster makers, it’s possible to ask them to make a holster for your gun if you provide them with a blue gun from which to mold it. (Different ballgame for larger volume makers using special-purpose molds designed for a given model… They are not likely to make a “one off” for you.) Rings makes a P30 blue gun. You can always ask if Raven or some other maker will make a holster for you if you send the blue gun and light to them. Of course, you could send your real gun, but then you are without it while the holster is made, and shipping on the actual gun is likely to be more expensive than the price of a blue gun that you can keep and use for other types of training. The worst they can say is “no.”

Thanks guys!! Somehow I missed that link on Raven’s website.

I agree with everyone else that its best to practice with what you will be wearing while CC’ing. I have a blackhawk serpa but I have only used it once…great holster…just not practical for anything other than the range.

I use a Comp-Tac CTAC and it is comfortable enough when I wear a undershirt. I got the CTAC over the MTAC because I also have an HK45C and they dont make an MTAC for the 45C. The CTAC fits both my P30 and the HK45C. I have also heard good things about the Crossbread holsters and will probably give one a try for my next purchase…a Springfield EMP.

Guys, I ordered the Raven Phantom holster with the IWB offset C hooks. I really like the fact that the holster is modular so if a clip breaks it’s a simple fix. Also the input about using 1 holster for consistency was a great point that I have never thought of. This is why this site rocks! No B.S. or drama, just the facts. I will try and remember to post feedback about the holster when it gets in.

Thanks!

Did you buy the CTAC molded for the P30 or the HK45C?

Tim

You want to get the CTAC molded for the HK 45C. Reason why it because it is just slightly bigger and it incorporates a mold for the safety lever. The P30 fits just fine in it and isn’t loose at all.
