P-Mag question

Bought a couple of the 30-rounder P-Mags (with window) at a gun show today. These are the first ones that I’ve owned and I figured I’d give them a try.

The dealer said that these are the “3rd generation” P-Mags. What are the differences between the generations?

Earlier models were said to have reliability issues. The newer ones have been revised and supposedly no longer have these issues.

What stormtracker said.

You should be all set as long as the production date is marked “7/07” or later:

Is magpul doing an exchange of earlier versions? I have several of the older ones that do not drop free from a mega lower, but mine assumption was that perhaps the magwell in the lower was out of spec. because they drop freely from my p.o.f lower and my aluminum mags do not have that problem in the mega.

I’d keep them. I have the same issues on various aftermarket lowers too, and I only have current production PMAGS. My one Colt lower drops all of them. I don’t find it to be an issue at all.

Don’t sweat it.

howdy,

my Sabre complete rifle "drops" them as well

Check the magpul website. They were but I don’t know the current status.

True. The older P-mags ill fit the same as the new P-mags in your lower. It is your lower that is out of spec, not the mag. This is a well known issue for Oly arm users and some other brands like yours.
The older P-mags had some feed issue I believe but I do not remember off the top of my head. All I know is it is by far the best mag available and for various reasons…

I believe this is the exchange page if your magpul is 6/07 or older

I picked up a windowed P Mag last weekend to try out. It will fall out of my AR lowers only when the bolt is closed and a few rounds are in the mag. The spring tension forces it out. With the bolt locked back the mag will not drop free. 03/08 is the date code on the mag.

I thought maybee the lowers were out of spec but it seem strange with two lowers and one of them being a Colt. They are Pre '94 guns though if that has anything to do with it.

You mean someone else trains to rip the magazines free instead of hoping they leap out on their own accord? Obviously no one wants a mag to bind, but I think the “drop free” issue is taken out of context at times.

You’re probably right on that one. I guess I’m just used to the USGIs and HKs falling right out. If your using a dump pouch I guess it doesn’t matter if they drop free or not.

If it’s not a tight bind, don’t worry about it. You know you can scrape a little material off the front of the mag body to help the fit.

Most pmag snugness is where the mag touches the front of the magwell. You can rub it on a concrete bench, or shave the high spots off with your knife to help this.

Yay. I’m not crazy.
Well, not in this instance at least. . .

I keep a few mags around in my “training only” kit that are known to cause issue- from non-drop free, to sticky follower, to nose-divers- as suprise corrective action inducers.

Of course I prefer to buy magazines that work ;).
