My younger brother is overseas in Afghanistan right now and I’d like to send him some stuff to make life a bit more pleasant for him. Snacks, coffee, etc. are on the list already, and I think I’ll throw in some FrogLube too. Can/should I send Pmags also, or do they have to be ordered by him? What else did any of you guys or people you know miss while over there?
I don’t think it would be an issue for p-mags. our guys here have been ordering muzzle breaks and comps for there rifles, I know cause it was listed on the customs form
I’m not in afghan but ours goes thru the HN UPS sort facility, secrecy doesn’t seem to be any concern
Saline nasal spray!!! Get’s the boogers out.
Baby wipes
Eye drops
His favorite snacks
His favorite magazines
If he has an ipod an itunes gift card
and some pmags what the heck
Logs of Copenhagen and cartons of cigarettes seemed to go over well when I had buddies overseas. Even if they aren’t users themselves.
My latest requests have been chips and salsa, canned soup/Dinty Moore, mandarin oranges, and pudding packs. If I knew the wife would go for it, I would also ask for dip.
The sequester has hit hard here folks. Quality and quantity of chow hall food has dropped drastically in the last 4 months, the PX’s are going to “expeditionary” mode which means that they are streamlining what they stock - not that they had much to begin with, Class 1 options have dropped off, and good luck getting replacement gear.
I’d also see what he needs as far as hygiene goes. We couldn’t get shaving cream, deoderant, etc for the first 3 months we were here. I rely on care packages to stay clean. When the PX gets in Grizz wintergreen, I pretty much buy several logs as they won’t have it again for awhile.
Batteries for whatever radio, MP3 player or entertainment device he has with him. Q-Tips and a small soft brush. Sunburn lotion with aloe. One quart zip loc bags. Cushioned socks. Hand sanitizer. Lotion for treating flea and other insect bites.
I wouldn’t send PMAG’s. I heard a few guys state that they were not allowed to use them (conventional units) and there could (I state, could) be an issue getting them back.
Send him the stuff others recommended.
Most of the time, the PX has all of that stuff. When they don’t, you want (and need) whatever they are out of. Where I am, they seem to have a hard time keeping toothpaste and mouthwash in stock.
I always liked gun/car/whatever reading material, because the internet is not as available here, or at least not as reliable. It’s hard to mess up with chocolate chip cookies, too.
We’ve sent all kinds of stuff to my brother in-law while he’s been in Iraq and Afghanistan. Cases of Girl Scout cookies from his nieces (my girls) always go over well. I sent him a compound bow and arrows on his second deployment over there.
This, if in doubt. Not a tobacco user, but I pretty much didn’t have to bother with any crap job or duty I didn’t want to, for the low price of being a cigarette and dip pack mule each time I went to/from Leatherneck.
I always enjoyed getting stuff the PX didnt have:
Rare candies from home
Gourmet licorice or beef jerky
MIO drink mix
and a whole hell of a lot of naked pics on hard drives and flashdrives.
Flashdrives are fantastic. Throw some new movies on one and send it out. He can send it back and you can get him more movies/shows. PMAGs are fine and so is Froglube, but they dont warm the heart like a picture of boobies and some sweet and sour beef jerky.
