outdoor ranges

Was just wondering if most people go to outdoor ranges. The range in this pic is in bristol tn but its a 2 hour drive (gas $). its only 2 dollars to shoot all day. The only closer one is 1 hour away thats an indoor range but its 15 bucks to shoot for one hour. Kinda weird for tennessee to have ranges so far away.

I don’t care where I shoot as long as I can draw from a holster. Anyone who pays money to bullseye shoot is a schmuck.

The closest range for rifle and pistol is at least 45 minutes away, and they have homo rules, no drawing from holster, 1 round per second etc. Lucky for me I have a gravel pit on DNR land about 10 minutes from my house with all the drawing from a holster and double tapping you wanna do. Costs me $30 a year for the Discover Pass though to park on state land.

Outdoor range. Being as I wore a tshirt to the range today and will tomarrow for a match, shooting inside on a lane is boring and loud even when I double plug. There also always seems to be some super douche whos shooting a 44mag revolver at a target 7 feet away in the next lane.

I prefer to shoot outside when weather conditions allow. If on a public range, also as crowd and safety conditions allow. In some indoor facilities, the pressure systems, baffle heights, and lighting leave me with a headache and/or bother my sinuses.

During the winter I have to use the local indoor range. I can’t do anything practical but still get to put some rounds down range. When it warms up and the snow melts off of the Forest Service roads everyone heads to the National Forest to shoot.

I’m fortunate enough to have a 50’ indoor range in my basement. The only time I go to the outdoor range is when I shoot rifles or target shoot beyond 50’.

I go to an outdoor range. It is $60 a year plus 6 hours of range work out $120 a year with no work. Has 7, 25, & 50 yard pistol ranges. 25, 50, 100, and 200 yard rifle. It is private so it can be pretty quite on Sundays. A lot of the time my fiancé and I will be the only ones there. It is about 30 min from my house. Only thing I wish was the was an “action” range.

Small town outdoor range here. Bunkers at 25 50 75 and 100. About 6 “stations.” Plus you can bring your own stand and targets. I usually bring a steel plate to shoot. Usually not too busy, and everyone’s friendly enough, as long as everyone is being safe can pretty much do what you want.

We have a very nice indoor range opening here in the next week or so. I’ve shot there once recently pre-opening in a Law Enforcement “fun” competition and had a blast. The rules, however, were different for this group of cops and first responders than they will be for the general public. I haven’t seen the list of rules, but so far it appears clear that there won’t be any holster work allowed, nor any head shots close up because of angle relative to the berm. I don’t know whether or not silhouette targets will be allowed.

I agree with the sentiment that shooting without being able to draw from a holster, and some of the other restrictions, is a significant impediment. My buddy and I have a very nice outdoor range on some private property a mile or two from my house, which is great for three seasons. OTOH, this is Minnesota and casual outdoor shooting in the winter is definitely problematic. This new indoor range may be the only game in town. I am enthusiastic, however, about their as-yet-undefined plans to start an indoor “action pistol league” as well as an as-yet-undefined series of training courses.

My buddy and I have a very nice outdoor range on some private land a couple of miles from my house. Definitely a luxury.

I have acess to a 0 -125 yard range that has hanging steel targets, is private, free and requires a short walk out of my basement.

I only go to public ranges for matches. Personally I would never go back to suburbia. Yesterday was typical a friend came over a we sighted in his Tikka .308, and played with my AR’s, and his new Mossberg Slugster with EOtech. Then went trail riding on 4 wheelers.

Being able to draw from the holster is essential. Although you can do this with dry fire practice at home, it’s obviously good to be able to have a place where you can do it with live fire. There’s a one particular range around here that doesn’t allow drawing from holster or even controlled pairs. Boring…

wow…kind of harsh.

If our next house has enough room in the basement, I want to set up a lane. Gonna take some serious bargaining with my wife, but I think I can pull it off.

They just opened a new indoor rifle/pistol range in my area. Straight up painful to
Shoot inside. I had to double up with plugs and muffs. It’s only 10min vs the 50min to my outdoor club. Figured I would give it a try, but id rather freeze my ass off than shoot there again.

Not about handguns, but besides the price and rules, there always seems to be someone shooting a .308 or some other higher caliber rifle at 55 foot range! and I get major slide blast at indoor ranges.

Also I get 9mm or 45 brass flying into my little section of my lane for people hold the pistol out past the wall to deflect brass. I got one to the head before. I just thought it was funny though.

The outdoor ranges here allow just about anything (especially once they get to know you), as long as you’re safe. But, I prefer to shoot on private land, of course. I have a couple friends with ranches ranging from 2,200 to 40,000 acres, so a little ass kissing get’s me out there quite a bit. We cleaned one of them up quite a bit with lanes exceeding 1,500 meters and a couple caliche (rock) pits up to 100 yards wide.

We have one indoor range that allows quite a bit of stuff, but oddly I feel like I accomplish more outdoors… Maybe since I’m not restricted by walls between lanes at the bench.

Good ole Texas.

I have an outdoor range within walking distance, but they have some stupid rules. No rapid fire, no more than 5rds in a mag… And they have old timers who are there that can’t mind there own business. That’s why I drive 50min away. Plus I can shoot out to 500.

Our outdoor range (closest indoor range is 50 miles away) is actually a club range. The Club is for competitive Shooting sports, like IDPA, USPSA, SASS, ICORE, and Steel Challenge. Once you become a member ($45.00 per year) you are given a combo to the range gate and have unlimited access, except during matches. Membership requires shooting 4 matches per year.
There are about 15 pistol bays and one rifle range of a little over 200 yards. It is never crowded. No check-in or supervision. You are on your own and simply must follow basic safety rules. There are a number of steel targets and plate racks available. You can practice all the drills you want.
It is only 15 minutes from home. What more can I ask for? I guess one drawback is that the weather has lately been been sub-zero at night and in the low teens during the day. It is supposed to be in the 20’s today. It is warming up.

Outdoor here in NH too…only about 15 minute drive from my house. It gets cold.
