I wanted to try a scope for my 3 gun rifle, which had been running an Aimpoint so far, and since I don’t have a lot of experience shooting scopes I bought a cheaper one for starters (Weaver Classic Extreme 1.5x - 4.5x) to see if these low powered variable scopes were something I would like. On lower power magnification 1.5 to maybe 2.5 the view through the scope is really clear but at 3 - 4.5 magnification the image starts to get out of focus. I’ve tried to adjust the it with the focus ring and it gets a little better but still not as good as I would want it to. I’ve tried both in bright light and low-light environment and also cleaned the lenses really well. Is this a cheap scope being just that…cheap, or could it be something else to it?
I cant speek to the qualty of the optic but its not one I would have recomended. I would send it in for repair, if that dosent fix it then its the scope. What did it cost?
I bought it used for 200 $. I’ll use it for a couple of matches and see how it goes how I like the whole variable scope thing. That what I bought it for.
Yeah I’ll take it to the local opics guy and let him have look. Leupold and Nikon have a few interesting models. Or maybe a Viper PST. We’ll see…
The focus ring is there just to get the reticle in focus for your eyes. You would do that once by looking up at a white ceiling and getting the reticle as clear as possible. That might not make it absolutely perfect at the far end of either the high or low range but might lessen your issue.
Lower magnification scopes have only the reticle focus described above, and no focus for the objective. The overall scope is essentially fixed focus, and has a minimum focus distance - which will vary considerably with the magnification (zoom) setting. What distances are the objects you’re looking at that won’t focus? Based on 1-4x and 1.5-5x scopes I have, the lowest magnification will be in focus for objects just a few feet away (1-2m), but at higher settings will not focus on objects closer than perhaps 20-30 feet (7-10m). This goes up fairly linearly with magnification - I also have a fixed 10x40mm scope that won’t focus on anything closer than about 20-25m. Many scopes with more magnification than maybe 9-10x have the ability to focus the objective, which will eliminate this problem.
