I just put a Noveske SPR on lay away. I am wondering which optic to put on it. I want to keep it as true to the SPR set up as possible. Here are my choices in no particular order:
Schmidt and Bender 1-6x scope
Nightforce 2.5-10x scope
ACOG 4x
One of the 1-4x powered scopes…maybe Horus Talon.
One of the "1.5-5x/6x/8x scopes like US Optics, Leupold, Swarvoski, etc.
I am looking for any recommendations and advice. Thanks in advance for responding.
The Nightforce 2.5-10x is what my SPR has on it. It is absolutely a great piece of kit.
What I like about the 10x option is it allows you to see better when scanning for threats. For instance, looking in windows, vehicles, etc. That may not be important for you, but it is for us.
At the 2.5 setting, it is acceptable for CQB use.
S&B makes great glass, but way over priced IMHO.
As always, it depends on what you want to do with it. The NF is probably the best option across the whole spectrum of ranges.
No doubt about it: the Schmidt & Bender is always going to be the more costly option, but you do get what you pay for. In the case of the 2.5x10.56mm (which I have owned), the advantage is in clarity and light transmission – especially the latter, as this scope was actually developed for night hunting applications in Germany.
I’ve made shots with S&B Zeniths (FD7) that simply wouldn’t have been possible with any other glass; that said, I do feel that the Nightforce represents the best value-to-feature ratio for most. I’ll very likely follow that path for my own in-progress SPR later in the year.
On my SPR build, I run a 2-12 IOR with the MP8 reticle. It works great from 25 yards and out. It is fairly compact and I am more than pleased with the glass. It has taken a 10 foot plus fall with no change of zero. It has been used in rain and cold with no problems. It works for CQB on 2X, better with the illumination maxed.
I just picked up a Meopta K dot for my patrol rifle and so far am stoked with my choice. I only got 40 rounds down range with it including zeroing. The glass is great and the reticle is bright even under bright sun.
They both fit their guns well and for their missions overlap nicely. For longer range shooting, I prefer the MP8 reticle and the tactical knobs of the IOR. For minute of man and 0-300 flexibily, the Meopta is looking pretty good so far. I “clearing” the house the Meopta on 1X with the illumination a little brighter than needed, the reticle seemed to “float” in front of my face as well as a RDS. The scope tube all but disappeared. If I ran it with the scope cover down (occluded eye gunsight) it worked well as well and the scope tube completet disappeared.
I would say define you wants a little more, the ranges at which you will shoot, and what you want to spend, and we can probably help narrow down your choices.
