Okay, I am facing a dilemma tonight. I was offered a trade to my AR-15…
Two assault rifles for my one. I have a Frankengun AR-15 (Double Star Lower, RRA Lower Parts, Match two-stage trigger, Larue Free-Float, Troy BUIS’s, cheap $100 reflex-sight, Wilson Barrel, Magpul MIAD, and GPS-01). I was offered a PTR-91 (HK Clone) G3, (7.62) and a NICE never fired SKS. The G3 is New, never fired as well. Included are 5 HK 20rnd. Mags(for G3) with carry pouches, anda free box of ballistic silvertips (.308).
Aside from ammo being more expensive (But seemingly more available), are there any other pros/cons you could list for me to consider on this deal?
I’m really torn here. I like the G3, but would want to mount optics, and the SKS is a nice rifle as well, but neither are built to the standards of my “evil (not black, but Magpul FDE) rifle”.
Just some boot, I suppose. Figured I’d sell it for a new Magpul stock IF I took the offer. Trying to get his MP5 in place of the SKS, but he’d want boot then…
He’s thinking “if he takes this trade then I get his AR and he gets my crap”. What do you really get out of it? It looks pretty one sided to me, a .308 gobbler with AK accuracy and an SKS for your AR? Are you really considering it? If so, put the crack pipe down and slowly back away…
I was honestly thinking that it was something that not everyone had, but I would need at least $1000 to purchase optics/mounts, stock, handguard to make it something I would like tocall “mine”. So now, I keep entertaining the idea of trading, selling both, and buying a gas-piston setup… I’m so confused right now…
My advice is not to take the trade…unless you have other AR’s in your collection that fit the same role.
If this had been during the AWB I would say go for it…simply for the investment value of a 2 to 1 ratio. These types of firearms have come down in price (and I hope they stay that way) so finding a good deal should be fairly easy. It sounds like to took a lot of time and money to get the AR just how you want it. Trust me, you will want to have another one soon and wil just have to start over.
Very true. Is it bad that I have already been pricing out parts to build another one, before the trade was a serious offer? I would LOVE to build a 10.5" SBR… but have heard different things from locals about our gun laws allowing/prohibiting them in KY… Any help there?
Normally I would always recommend having an AR-15 before a G3 type rifle but in this case the G3 type (PTR91) is so much better than a FrankenAR on a Doublestar receiver you may want to consider it. Then sell the SKS and start working towards a quality AR like a Colt or DD.
I dont know for certain…but KY is a “southern” state and they tend to be more pro-gun than northern ones…I don’t think class II and III firearms are prohibited in that state…
Those Larue Tactical Billet Lowers and Stealth Uppers look pretty sweet. Looks like a nice platform for a new rifle… May try to sell the frankengun and build a total LARUE Rifle. And if it won’t sell, may trade and sell the two others for the build money. Lots of choices…
Yeah what kind of SKS? if it is a run of the mill Chinese or yugo it is nothing special but if he is throwing in a East German one or something that makes this a no brainer.
I’d go for it and at the minimum sell off the SKS to fund goodies for the G3- if not sell both and get a decent AR.
I’m not sure exactly what type it is, but from my research, it is Russian-made(with the Star on top), it appears Brand New, Bayonet is attached and fully functional, NO marks or scrapes on the stock (Kind-of a deeper red color wood stock)… it’s in great condition.
What would that and the PTR-91 bring in today’s market? Enough to buld a Larue Rifle? That would be my pick of builds right now.
