Opinions on billet uppers?

Would you consider paying the extra cash for a billet upper vs forged? I’m wanting to build a precision type ar-15 and am stuck on this decision. Is there a big advantage in accuracy between billet and forged?

Yes, but I am known to spend money needlessly.

Nope.

Agreed, but that being said, I have two Mega Machine matched billet sets, gtr-3h, and they are so nice!

I was actually looking at seekins myself. I missed the boat on Mega’s monolithic uppers.

Frankly I doubt you’ll see the difference between a quality forged upper and a billet. I could even see a forged upper like the Vltor MUR-1 being more accurate than a cheap billet, due to better tolerances and QC. Besides being more expensive, billet uppers are also heavier and less-compatible with free float rail systems (due to anti-rotation tab interference).

Spend your money on practice, quality ammo, a good barrel, Geissele SSA, etc. Billet uppers/lowers don’t offer any real functional advantages over their quality forged counterparts.

I’ve been eyeballing geissele’s SD enhanced trigger. I love flat triggers. Cutting out the billet receivers will save over $300.

The general gist of things is that a standard forged flat top upper CAN flex when shooting, the removal of the carry handle from the original Stoner design did lose a lot of strength in that area. Billet designs and others like the Vltor MUR are a bit thicker in some areas to help compensate.

So, in theory, the billet uppers could be more accurate because they are stiffer. But in actual use, I doubt you or anyone else here would really be able to tell the difference.

The Seekins uppers are pretty sexy, though.

I have a Geissele SSA and SD-E in my two ARs. I’m a huge fan of the SD-E, and will continue using it in all of my future builds as funds become available (I have three spare triggers laying around, including an ALG-ACT that I use as a stop gap until I can install a G trigger).

Can’t go wrong with G. I have been considering using the DMR trigger in my current .308 project.
