Opening Up AK Sight Notch - How Much?

I’m planning on opening up the rear sight on my AK a bit, wondering how far to go. Is it purely to my liking, or is there a set distance that makes the most sense? I don’t want to go too far and find out later that it sucks and I need a new sight.

I took a 3/8ths triangular file to the sight on my 74. I took it to the bottom of the original notch. It works great.

.135-.145" or so

I just use the side of a small mill bastard file. It comes out to about .107". I have been tempted to go a bit wider but so far they are working as is.

I’ll measure mine tonight, I just grabbed a file and went to town until it looked right. I also added a dab of white paint to the top of the front sight post which yielded an improvement (for me anyway).

I sent all my rear sights to Jim Fuller at Rifle Dyanmics. IIRC for $30 he opens them up, rounds the edges which according to an optimalogist he asked help draw the shooters eye through the notch, and refinishes the sight.

An opened sight and a manageable trigger are the two best upgrades that can be done to an AK to improve effectiveness. (discounting optics, etc.)

Thanks guys. I’ll dig up the file tonight.

I’m interested in this topic, as I opened up my rear sight a little bit, but I was afraid to go too far.
FYI according to Jim Fuller, his rear sight is opened up to 3/16" = .1875", which is way more than I would have thought.

That measurement might be wrong though:
