If you could only take one gun with you due to time, space(capacity), mobility, ammo. constraints, what would it be? You are going to have to cross wide open spaces, forested areas, semi-urban, and heavily urban areas. If you have a family, take that into consideration.
The S*** Has Hit The Fan(for whatever reason) and you have to get to coordinates that require you to(eventually) cross all these types of terrain. The general population must be considered potentially dangerous because they may want what you have.
You will have to spend nights in areas ranging from the forest to urban. Any and all situations have the potential to arise. You may stay in a barn one night, an apartment building in the city the next, and in a forest the next. Potentially deadly confrontations may occur in any one of these locations.
It may seem farfetched, but there could be develpoments that make any one of us have to bug out. Think EMP strike, Jihadists infected with genetically altered small pox(if you think this is B.S. read the scholarly book “GERMS,”)(they want their 72 virgins) or multiple simultaneous terror attacks that cause panic, terror, and upheaval in the gen. pop.
Who would the manufacturer of your gun of choice be?
What model would it be?
What ammo. would you take?(if you had a choice)
Which mags would you choose?(can’t take it all)
What spare parts do you take?(Be reasonable)
My vote, a Colt 6933(SBR) and M193 ammo. I’ll compromise on heavier bullet weights. PMags. BCG.(Colt) CLP for lube/cleaning.
LMT Gas Piston MRP
LWRC
HK416
FN SCAR
Masada concept (yes, it’s only vaporware… I know this)
AK74
Colt LE 6920
One of Noveske’s nice 18" carbines.
AK47
Any of them will work just fine.
Aimpoint or Trijicon Accupoint optics and all would be just peachy. PMAGS, spare parts in pistol grip, foregrip and in SOPMOD stock (ARs).
Interesting question you pose. Honestly, I’d probably choose one of two options:
First, like you, Colt 6920 with about 10 PMAGs and an extra BCG and some lube. However, I do have concerns about the bullet weight being capable of taking care of all threats and at the same time, being sufficient to take game that can be found in the environments you listed. For small game, the 5.56 is sufficient, but at ranges beyond 150 meters, the M4 lacks the accuracy and power to knock down medium game such as deer.
So my second option would be a Springfield M-14 SOCOM with a 3-9 power scope and about 15 magazines full of .308’s. It’s capable of CQB and medium range defense, and at the same time it’s accurate enough and the .308 retains enough energy at distances over 150 meters.
Tough question! I’ll be interested in seeing some of the other responses. I guess that if the S really HTF, more than one weapon is optimal, however impractical.
Yes…an interesting question…would prefer to see that I could also tote a sidearm…that would be a 3rd gen G17 with SF X300 but otherwise to anwer the orignal question, I’d probably go with my 16" Recce type AR with 18 tooth black out FH, AAC M4 1000 suppressor, a Trijicon TR24 in an LT193 mount, SF scout light, and at least 9 Pmags (eight on the chest rig and one in the weapon). If I new it to be 100% reliable with propper care/maintenance, which it should be, I’d go with the new Knights SR-15 E3 IWS http://www.knightarmco.com/images/sr15_2.html
add one of the unobitaninum KAC comps/suppressor attachments and an NT4 suppressor, and otherwise the same accessories
AMMO - 62 grn nato ball
Spare parts: complete BCG (KAC or Colt) and spare fire control group
In the real world based on what I currently have, I’d pack my SBR upper with my complete Recce.
A AK under folder, easy to carry concealed under a jacket. Your enemies will think you are unarmed until it is to late for them. It also can fire thousands of rounds with out extra lube or cleaning.
Ar15, just because I’m comfortable with it and know what it’s capable of in all different environments. That and I’m sure I’d meet a couple of yahoo’s from this forum in the woods in the same situation as me. So being able to have a weapon where you can get ammo somewhat easily would be a plus in my eyes.
Setting aside fantasy weapons (howzabout an AC-130 w/105mm main gun, 20mm Gatling guns, etc. … ridiculous firepower, plus, you get great mobility), I’d debate between –
> A Noveske N4 in SPR configuration, AAC M4-2K, Trijicon TR-24 in an LT193 mount, 6 30-rd mags and 2 20-rd mags (all Brownell’s with MagPul followers), and as much Mk262 as I could carry,
or
> A metric FN-FAL clone, Trijicon TR-24, 6-8 20-rd mags, standard M80 ammo.
Plus basic cleaning kit, oil/CLP, and a few minor spare parts (firing pin, small springs and things which are either easy to lose or liable to wear quickly).
The FAL is larger, heavier, harder to carry covertly, but is reliable and has more long-range punch. My guess as to the balance of urban/semi-urban (relatively short-range) vs open-country/long-range scenarios would determine my choice.
A 2nd generation Glock 17 or 22 with Trijicons would be a nice addition, but is not allowed under the posted rules … plus a pair of good 9x35 binoculars.
+Manufacturer = me
+Global Tactical Operator 12.5" barrel, LT handguard
+TA33R-8
+Quality parts throughout, including FN contract bolt carrier and BCM bolt
I choose a 12.5" barrel for the extra MV and fragmentation range on the Hornady 75gr T2 TAP rounds I’d be carrying in PMAGs. I’d have a couple of mags loaded with Federal 64gr TBBC for intermediate barrier situations. Spares would include an extra BCG and firing pin. Surefire G2LED with Malkoff drop-in and an LT offset light mount for less than perfect illumination situations. Extra batteries, of course.
16" Piston upper(LWRC M6A2) with Colt lower. M3 2MOA w/3X flip.
Some lube. Extra LPK and Bolt/Firing Pin
Bunch of PMAGs(min 6) w/69gr FMJ and some 62gr SS109.
or
Arsenal SLR-106FR(5.56) with T1
min 6 mags w/69gr FMJ and some 62gr SS109
5.56 guns since it would be one of the mose easy rounds to find.
This might have a better chance in GD or Disaster…
Who would the manufacturer of your gun of choice be? LMT(mine).
What ammo would you take?(if you had a choice) 75gr TAP in 5.56
Which mags would you choose?(can’t take it all) Take a guess.
What spare parts do you take?(Be reasonable) Just for the rifle? The spare bolt in my MIAD,batteries,LPK,and a bottle of WS…maybe a spare charging handle after seeing one break recently. Those things come in handy.
Not M4C approved, but thinking a Garand.
Heavy and unwieldy in some situations but for most things it would be just fine.
Lots of thump both ballisticly and when used in club/butt stroke fashion.
Plenty accurate.
Reliable.
