A Mississippi police officer involved in the fatal shooting of one-year-old Kohen Wiley while responding to a shoplifting call has been placed on administrative leave, officials confirmed on Tuesday night. The shooting occurred outside a Walmart in Senatobia on Sunday.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, which is investigating the shooting, said in a statement that officers responding to a shoplifting call had “encountered two subjects and a juvenile child fleeing from the store into a vehicle.”
As police tried to stop the vehicle, the driver drove toward them and almost hit an officer, according to the bureau.
An officer then shot at the vehicle, which drove away. The two women drove to a hospital, where Kohen was pronounced dead. No law enforcement officers were seriously injured, the bureau said.
Wiley’s mother was physically unharmed, but her friend was seriously injured, according to Marquell Bridges, the president and founder of an advocacy group called the Building Bridges Coalition.
I personally am opposed to bringing toddlers on my shop lifting sprees.
The family is mourning the loss of Kohen Wiley, who was killed during an officer-involved shooting Sunday afternoon at the Walmart on U.S. 51 in Senatobia.
Investigators said officers were responding to a shoplifting call when they encountered two adults with a juvenile child fleeing the store and getting into a vehicle.
MBI said officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver drove in the direction of officers, nearly striking one of them. An officer then discharged their weapon before the vehicle fled the scene.
“It didn’t have to happen this way. It could’ve been handled differently,” said LiCole Wiley, a relative of those involved in the incident. Exactly
Wiley said she does not understand how a shoplifting call could lead to a child being shot and a woman being critically injured, saying she believes the incident stemmed from the alleged theft of diapers.
“Senatobia, Mississippi police opened fire in a public setting over allegedly some Pampers,” Wiley said.
So you risked that Childs Life when you tried to run over a Cop knowing he would shoot at you?
Dumbass.
